A simplified explanation of an AI scaling breakthrough from Kimi’s new paper, “Attention Residuals.” New research from Kimi (Moonshot AI) proposes a small change to transformers that could make AI models cheaper and better at reasoning. Instead of layers simply adding information, each layer can now use attention to choose which earlier layers to use. AI already uses attention to decide which words matter. Now it can decide which layers matter too. Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, has warned that the U.S.’s race-to-deploy AI fast without adequate safety guardrails could backfire by helping competitors (including China) catch up while leaving society less prepared.
