are you a tomato hater or lover? 🍅 I’ve found that since learning how to make risographs I still color every piece as if it will printed as one. (Just in case I do end up sending it to be produced) This one for example, is drawn using, red, lime, and navy. I just set the color layers to multiply to get this effect with opacity.

How do risographs print images? It’s a really cool method involving a type of “stencil” or screen called a “master” The image gets translated through the printer and then burned into the master with a ton of tiny holes. Those holes allow ink to pass through really similar to screen printing. The pattern that gets burned in is mostly automatic with a few settings we control for you to create the best looking image of your art we can. Some of the options (simplified) include arranging the dots into a neat arrangement and some include making them a random arrangement. The random arrangement is best for color mixing and photos. While the more neat arrangement is best for text, small images, and crisp blends. We can also go a step further and modify the file to mix and match these effects and add even add halftones! 12 years ago I lived in #Japan working as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT). During this time I had to use the weird crappy photocopiers that seemed to never work properly and always gave less-than-perfect and unexpected results. But an artist friend told me they were called #Risographs and that they were awesome. You just gotta embrace the #imperfections. He was right and so began my Riso obsession. Every #Risograph print on my old machine is unique with misalignments, printer marks, and uneven printing. I love it! Follow along to watch my #process.

Wait!!!! here’s some stuff you might not know about riso— 🌈 Risograph printing looks like a mix between screen printing and photocopying, but it’s a unique process with quirks that some might recognize as an automated version of a mimeograph! Do you remember those?? 🌈 Unlike traditional printers, risographs use soy-based ink that never fully dries—so smudging is part of the charm. Each color requires a separate pass through the machine, meaning perfect registration is rare, and misalignments are common (and often celebrated). 🌈 Riso machines use stencil-based printing, similar to mimeographs, and can only print one color at a time. They’re most cost-effective for medium to large print runs, with sweet spots between 50–500 copies. Despite their lo-fi look, they’re fast and eco-friendly, using minimal energy and producing little waste. 🌈 The color palette isn’t standard CMYK! colors like fluorescent pink, sunflower, and metallic gold give risograph its cult following.
