In this episode of Always Angling, I’m on the River Lugg in Herefordshire, right on the Welsh border. We’re wild camping in a farmer’s field through Wild With Consent, which gives us access to 1,000m of fishing rights along this stunning stretch of river. The Lugg is a winding, oxbow-filled river with gravel shallows, deeper bends, and plenty of promise for brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling, chub, and perch. Armed with maggots, casters, a classic Mitchell Match reel, and a Drennan float rod, I set out to trot this narrow but lively water. But fishing isn’t always straightforward… 🎣 Day 1: Minnows galore, a noisy race track in the background, and more tangles than trout. 🎣 Day 2: Peaceful conditions, different swims explored, and even a signal crayfish spotted—but still a river running unusually low after a drought. 🎣 Highlights: experimenting with stick floats and wagglers, losing and rescuing floats, trying a tiny Salmo lure on a float rod (not recommended!), and generally learning the quirks of this stretch of water. In the end, it wasn’t a red-letter fishing trip, but the scenery was beautiful, the challenge was real, and I still had a great time exploring this special river.
