#Robert Mcgee

Robert McGee was an American frontier worker and former soldier whose name became widely known because of the extraordinary injuries he survived during the Indian Wars. This studio portrait was taken after 1864, likely in the late 1860s to early 1870s, and shows McGee in profile to document the lasting effects of his ordeal. In 1864, McGee was captured during a conflict on the Great Plains and was scalped by a Sioux chief known as Little Turtle. Remarkably, he survived the attack and later lived for many years afterward. His survival drew significant public attention, and he was frequently photographed and exhibited as a living example of frontier violence and endurance. Images of McGee were circulated in carte-de-visite and cabinet card formats, often accompanied by explanatory captions like the one visible here. The photograph was taken by E. E. Henry, a photographer known for documenting notable figures of the post–Civil War era. McGee’s exposed scalp and heavy beard were deliberately emphasized, reflecting 19th-century interest in documenting physical trauma as historical evidence.
