Most people think birds sit on their eggs right away… but robins don’t. A robin lays one egg per day, then waits to incubate until they’re all laid so they hatch at the same time. What happens next is even more incredible. From hatching to leaving the nest in just about two weeks, these chicks go from helpless to airborne in under a month. Out here on the farm, you get to see how everything works together… timing, growth, and purpose. #BackFortyFarms #RobinNest #NatureFacts #FarmLife #WildlifeEducation shorts

Remember the robins that hitched a ride from Virginia to long island on a box truck?well they are all grown up and have been released! Such a great feeling to watch them fly off! Hope you enjoyed following their journey. HOW LONG DO ROBINS EGGS TAKE TO HATCH? After laying her eggs, a mother robin sits on the nest for about 12-14 days until her babies hatch. Both the mother and father robin feed the babies. They take turns flying in and out of the nest all day long bringing their babies their meals. WHAT DO BABY ROBINS EAT? For the first four days, the parents feed them regurgitated food, and then their parents start giving them small bits of earth worms. Soon after, they start feeding them whole worms and bugs. HOW LONG DO BABY ROBINS STAY IN THE NEST? Baby robins are ready to fledge (leave the nest) when they’re 13-14 days old. WHERE DO BABY ROBINS GO WHEN THEY FLEDGE? The mother and father robin will stay close to the fledglings once they leave the nest, but the mother will need to leave them before long to lay another clutch of eggs. They’ll stay with the father and continue to learn from him (and from other robins) until Dad has to leave them to take care of the new round of babies. #AmericanRobin #WildlifeRescue #BirdRehab #NatureFacts #BabyBirds #BirdWatching #BackyardBirds #EarthwormDiet

How lucky was I to be able to witness one full month of the life of a Robin family? Coincidentally, this family built their nest in front of one of my windows so every day I could see and record what they were doing! Over one month I spent hours watching this family of Robins. . As you probably noticed, one of the 4 eggs didn’t make it. The 3 chicks that hatched grew incredibly fast. I can’t believe how big they got in just a couple of weeks!. . On day 30 one of the 3 chicks left the nest (I missed the moment when this happened). One day later the other 2 chicks left the nest too. I witnessed the moment when the second chick left the nest but wasn’t able to record it. But one hour later I was able to record the moment when the third chick left the nest. . Did you know that both male and female robins participate in the nest-building, the incubation of the eggs, and the feeding of the chicks? . By the way, did you notice the way the chicks pooped? Instead of pooping in the nest, they pooped by producing a membranous sac (fecal sac) that contains their feces. In the video you could see how the parent Robin would either eat the fecal sacs or take them away from the nest. Fecal sacs are an incredible way to keep the nest nice and clean, and a clean nest is a nest that reduces the chances for predators to find the nest! Also, as gross as it may seem, the parents eating the fecal sacs has to do with the fact that the feces of the chicks usually contain undigested nutrients that can still be valuable to the parents. . Biology is so beautiful! #turdusmigratorius #robin #cuteanimals #birdnest #fecalsac

The Robin nest in my shed I photographed previously is being reused for another trio of eggs. This patient mother has been incubating the eggs for almost 2 weeks and this morning just before 9 am, the first hatched! Here’s videos of incubation, egg shell removal, and first feeding.
