Wentworth Miller was born on June 2, 1972 in Chipping Norton. His father was an American academic, and he grew up mainly in Brooklyn. He studied at Princeton University and graduated with a degree in English literature. After university he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. For several years he struggled to find stable roles and worked small jobs while attending auditions. His big breakthrough came in 2005 when he played Michael Scofield in the TV series Prison Break. The role made him internationally famous and earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination. Despite his success, Miller later spoke openly about personal struggles. For many years he hid his sexual orientation and felt strong pressure in the entertainment industry. In 2013 he publicly came out as gay while declining an invitation to a film festival in Russia, criticizing the country’s anti-LGBTQ laws. He has also discussed past mental-health struggles. In interviews and social media posts, he said that during his teenage years he experienced depression and had periods where he thought about harming himself.
