Have you ever noticed a glittery shimmer in a rock, or the bottom of a sunlit stream? You’re not imagining things! You’re likely looking at a metamorphic rock called schist (or its eroded sediments in a stream), which (in this case) is made up largely of mica minerals like chlorite, muscovite, and/or biotite - and sometimes you can see garnets! Yooperlites are syenite rocks embedded with sodalite, a mineral that fluoresces bright orange under ultraviolet light due to its ability to absorb UV wavelengths and re-emit them as visible light. In daylight they look like ordinary gray rocks, making them nearly impossible to identify without a UV light source. They are found primarily along the shorelines of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which is where the name comes from, combining Yooper, the nickname for residents of the Upper Peninsula, with lite, a reference to the sodalite inside. The fluorescence is a natural chemical property of the sodalite mineral and does not fade or wear off over time. #rocks #geology #nature #minerals yooperlite
