TENG TIME IS ME TIME I don’t even know how long I’ve known @tengroma. Maybe as long as the three decades I’ve spent writing about how to live well. I’d run into him now and then, and every time, without fail, he’d say, “Drop by the salon. You deserve the works.” I’ve only taken him up on the offer three times. Once when @emphasis_salon opened at S Maison, which was conveniently on my way to work. Once during the height of the lockdowns, when everything else was shut, except a secret floor at the Raffles where Teng quietly kept beauty alive. And now this, an afternoon at Emphasis Rockwell. I had a treatment that nourished my hair, a back rub that eased the knots, and a hand massage that revived every inch of me. I passed out somewhere in the middle. While cutting my hair, Teng poured me cofee with Bailey's, as he told me about his travel days. How he used to fly out on a whim, book a hotel on the spot, and stay as long as he pleased, depending on what was playing, say, at La Scala. “I was the original backpacker, you know,” he said. Can you guess his age? You won't believe me if I told you. From Rockwell, I drove straight to the Shangri-La Fort for the @tatlerphilippines x @rudyprojectph party (reel to come). Rockwell on J. P. Rizal to Edsa took an hour, the worst traffic in recent memory. But I had just come from Emphasis. Sorti en janvier 1984, Somebody’s Watching Me de Rockwell est devenu l’un des morceaux les plus paranoïaques et iconiques des années 80. Derrière cette ambiance étrange et oppressante, Rockwell raconte une peur simple mais universelle : celle d’être observé en permanence. Chez lui, au téléphone, dans sa chambre, même sous la douche, il a l’impression que quelqu’un l’espionne sans arrêt. C’est cette paranoïa quotidienne, transformée en tube pop, qui donne au morceau toute sa force. Mais ce qui rend la chanson vraiment culte, c’est son refrain devenu mythique : “I always feel like somebody’s watching me”… et oui, cette voix, c’est bien Michael Jackson. Beaucoup reconnaissent instantanément sa voix, mais peu savent que ce tube n’est pas le sien. Michael enregistre ce refrain très rapidement, presque comme un service rendu à Rockwell, qui n’est autre que Kennedy Gordy, le fils de Berry Gordy, fondateur du label Motown. Pour éviter qu’on réduise sa carrière à son nom de famille, Kennedy choisit le pseudo Rockwell.
