For context, since we’ve moved in I’ve accidentally left the oven on like 5 times after cooking, and apparently that’s super dangerous??? I think the final straw was last night when I was cooking pasta and somehow it ended up literally black and we had a mini fire. I tried to put it out with water, but that only made the flames bigger. Apparently I was supposed to use the fire extinguisher… I’m still learning how to cook. I don’t get the whole situation. Like, where is she even going to put it? A super mom with no arms uses her feet to sew clothing for her children. I was curious about her so I did some digging and came across an article from July 17th, 1954 in an Australian magazine called Pix. Below is an excerpt: “PHYLLIS LUMLEY moved across the kitchen in her six-roomed house at Battersea, London, picked up her three-week-old baby Mark and sat him on her lap. It is a simple action in the telling, but for Mrs. Lumley it marked a tale of singular triumph over adversity. For Mrs, Lumley was born without arms and with one withered foot 6in shorter than the other. Since birth she has been accustomed to use her feet as other people use their hands. A woman with a naturally happy disposition, Phyllis Lumley recalls few moments of anxiety or fear until she knew that her first baby was on the way, ‘Strangely,’ she says, ‘they were just the usual fears and anxieties that every mother goes through the first time. I never once had a thought that the child might be born like myself—deformed.’ Frequently in her childhood she had seen expectant mothers start at the sight of her, heard them remark with almost medieval superstition, ‘Don’t let that child come near me. My own baby might be born like her!’ But when the time came, for her own prenatal visits to the clinic she found that doctors and other mothers of a more enlightened age treated her as though she were perfectly normal. Phyllis admits, ‘Right after the baby was born, I’m afraid I did ask whether she was all right. Then they brought her to me and it was the most wonderful moment in my whole life. She was just perfect.’ Mrs. Lumley has had six other babies since then. Every one of them is physically perfect, too.”
