Choosing the right seed cell size can make or break your seedlings 🌱 Small cells dry out faster, large cells affect root structure, and not every plant wants the same space. If your seedlings stall, flop, or transplant poorly — this is probably why. #seedstarting #gardeningtips #seedlings #plantscience

I’ll be honest… I expected this to take longer to put together. But the GreenStalk planter was actually incredibly simple. No complicated tools. No confusing steps. Just stack, fill, and plant. And what I love most about it is how accessible it is. Small backyard? Patio? Limited mobility? Just getting started? This planter makes growing food feel doable. And that’s exactly why I was so excited to interview GreenStalk’s head gardener for the Spring Gardening Summit. We talk about: • What crops grow best in it • How to maximize your harvest in a small space • Tips for beginners • And how to make gardening simpler, not more overwhelming If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t have enough space to grow much,” this session is going to open your eyes. 🌱 The Spring Gardening Summit is free. Ever wonder why nursery seedlings look darker and sturdier than the ones at home? 🌱 It’s usually fertilizer. Seed starting mix has little to no nutrients and once true leaves appear, your seedlings need consistent, diluted feeding to thrive. ✔️ Water lightly first to pre-moisten soil ✔️ Fertilize at ¼–½ strength ✔️ Start after true leaves ✔️ Fully dilute thicker fertilizers Small adjustments make a big difference. Save this for your seed starting season ✨#gardeningtips #gardentok #seedstarting #plantcare #gardening

Sharing my tips on intensive planting with you today… Only 5 things to consider when it comes to intensive planting: 1. Soil Health Compost, worm castings, cover crops are your friend. 2. Size of Plant Large/ tall plants in the middle, medium sized plants next to them and short plants on the edges or borders. Use trellises for tall, vining crops to grow vertically, like peas, cucumbers, tomatoes and pole beans, and free up space below to grow more food. 3. Sunlight Requirement Short, shade loving crops like lettuce, cilantro, arugula can be grown in the canopy of large plants like cabbages, broccoli and tomatoes. 4. Companion Planting Grow lots of herbs and flowers for natural pest control and to attract pollinators and beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings. I love marigolds, calendula, basil, cilantro, rosemary, thyme, oregano, bunching onions and leeks to deter pests. 5. Succession Planting Especially important for quick maturing crops like lettuce, cilantro, arugula and radishes - gives you a continuous supply of food while preventing bare soil and empty patches in the garden. *The only exception I make to planting large crops in the middle is zucchini or squash - they can grow massive - so plant them in the corners of your raised beds. Hope you’ll incorporate these strategies to grow a garden that’s beautiful, packed & thriving! 🙌 #gardeningtips #intensiveplanting #growfood #vegetablegarden #reshgala #gardening #companionplanting #successionplanting #kitchengarden #learntogrow

Garden notes: soil edition. If you’re a beginner gardener building your garden for the first time, I’m posting all the heavy-hitter subjects you’ll need to know for a successful harvest later this year. Follow along as I build my new garden from scratch step by step.

When seedlings are tiny, water pressure matters. A fine mister keeps the soil surface evenly moist without disturbing delicate stems or shallow roots. A regular garden wand can: • Displace seeds before they germinate• Compact soil and limit airflow• Knock over fragile seedlings• Create uneven moisture pockets Consistent surface moisture is CRITICAL during germination. Bottom watering with a tray also works well. This allows moisture to move upward gently through the soil profile without disturbing the surface. I use Fogg-It misters rated no more than 1 GPM — mine is 0.5 GPM for the gentlest pressure. Gentle moisture now will give you stronger plants later. Today I chatted with Yuliya from @ydoyougarden all about seed starting, what we’re excited to grow this year, why we like starting from seed and how we each do it differently. We kept the live to under an hour and here are some of the highlights: - Some of the plants Yuliya mentioned growing this year are Dreadlocks Amaranth, Orlaya, Nicotiana, Mahogany Splendor Hibiscus. Plants she is looking forward to growing are Sweet Sultan and Nodding Sage (Rare Seeds) - Steppables that Julia is having success growing from seed and Amanda is failing at growing from seed are corsican mint, irish moss and thyme. (comment STEP for a seed company that sells all 3 for great prices and a discount code) - This year Yuliya is trying a seed starting mix she makes herself. It is made up of 3 parts coco coir and 1 part sand and a small amount of Kickass Frass plant food. - Amanda uses sifted @foxfarmssoilandfertilizer Bush Doctor Coco Loco for seed starting and does not add any extra nutrition until a couple weeks after the seedlings germinate. At that time, Amanda feeds with Kickass Frass mixed with water. - The soil blocker shown in video is the Nano 16 which is coming back in stock soon. Comment NANO for the a link. - Kickass Frass is what we are both using to feed our seedlings. Comment FEED for the link to buy. - Yuliya is a super talented landscape designer and you can get her guide, “Design Your Dream Garden” by commenting GUIDE The automated software I use to send you the requested links only allows one link sent per person per post, so if you need any just send me a DM with the link you want. #seedstarting #gardening #gardener #gardenfriends
