Na fatídica noite de 14 de abril de 1912, enquanto o Titanic desaparecia sob as gélidas águas do Atlântico Norte, histórias de coragem e abnegação emergiram entre os passageiros. Entre elas, destaca-se Lucy Noël Martha Leslie, a Condessa de Rothes, que, em vez de se proteger com seu título e riqueza, ofereceu amparo e conforto aos que estavam ao seu redor naquele momento de grande aflição. Nascida em 25 de dezembro de 1878 em uma das famílias mais abastadas da Inglaterra, Noël era filha única de Thomas e Clementina Dyer-Edwards. Cresceu em meio ao luxo e recebeu uma educação primorosa. Seu matrimônio com Norman Evelyn Leslie, o Conde de Rothes, a elevou a uma figura proeminente na alta sociedade londrina, frequentando até mesmo os círculos da realeza britânica. Contudo, além do glamour da aristocracia, Noël possuía um forte senso de responsabilidade social. A maternidade, em 1902, despertou nela uma grande vocação solidária, impulsionando projetos beneficentes como a Escola Rainha Vitória em Dunblane e o Hospital Chelsea para Mulheres. Em 1911, fundou uma filial da Cruz Vermelha em Leslie, equipando-a com três ambulâncias e treinando mais de 60 voluntários. Também apoiou o movimento sufragista como membro da Associação Unionista de Mulheres. Em abril de 1912, Noël embarcou no Titanic rumo aos EUA, onde se reuniria com o marido. Viajava na primeira classe acompanhada de sua prima Gladys Cherry e sua criada, sem imaginar que aquela jornada mudaria sua vida para sempre. Após a colisão com o iceberg, Noël manteve a serenidade. Cerca de uma hora após o impacto, entrou no bote salva-vidas número 8, onde assumiu o comando junto com um marinheiro. Durante a travessia, ela incentivou as mulheres a bordo, tentando acalmar seu medo enquanto viam seus maridos permanecerem no navio condenado. Ao serem resgatadas pelo Carpathia, Noël não pensou apenas em si. Ajudou crianças e mulheres da terceira classe, muitas delas imigrantes que haviam perdido tudo. De volta a Londres, continuou seu trabalho humanitário. Durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, transformou parte de sua mansão em um hospital para soldados feridos, onde atuou como enfermeira.
