I tried… I tried to use the bronze clay today. I essentially just threw away $76. So to end the day positivity, even if it’s not much, I used the remaining bit of my silver clay to make this little baby frog. You can kind of see the defeat in my face in the very beginning of the video. I tried to make a teapot tea pet, a frog tea pet, pendants.. you name it. The bronze clay I bought was awful. I think this will be the end of my metal clay exploration for a bit. It’s just to expensive to experiment with. This little frog out of silver clay? That’s like 30 dollars worth. I was also having a rough day so that could have been the problem. I still have a little of the bronze clay left.. so maybe il make a little fish necklace at some point. #frog #bleh

Before you ask why on earth I made these, considering my last tests with this black clay were so dreadful, well, these were thrown and trimmed long before I fired those initial tests. But I’ve got some ideas on how to get these through the kilns successfully. It seems that enclosed sections—whether it’s the space within a lidded form (a body with a lid on top) or the cavity within a foot-ring cause the glaze to fire rough and scratchy, presumably because the gases can’t escape from the glaze and the manganese decomposing in the clay. So for these, they’ll be placed in the lowest-temperature spots in the kiln, and I’ll raise them up on props. I’m going to create a kind of channel in those props so the gas inside the foot can escape, or I’ll simply fire them on wadding, a clay-like mixture I make from 50% kaolin and 50% coarse alumina hydrate and stick, like tiny feet, into the foot, raising it up. Whilst I don’t think lidded forms will work with this particular black clay, I believe these should be fine, provided I don’t overfire them. #clay #stoneware #studiopottery #pottery #tableware #ceramics

Funny Tom & Jerry Sounds! . It’s time for some golf goofs! Some links hijinks! Some fairway folly, or shall I say fairway foley! Is my wordplay up to par? Somebody stop me! Tee-hee! Oof, that was rough. . Here’s my take on the classic Tom & Jerry cartoon “Tee for Two,” originally released in 1945! This one was very challenging but also a lot of fun, kind of like golf I suppose. These are all my original sound effects and the background music is Louis Armstrong’s “Swing that Music” — which was really just to sneak in one more golf pun. . I love to incorporate percussion instruments from all over the world in these videos. Today’s special feature is that little clay hand drum, called the Taarija drum from Morocco, one of my favorite sounds! Fore! Drum Comedy! Happy summer everybody! . #rhythmsofcomedy #tomandjerry #golf #soundeffects #sounddesign #musician #rhythm #viral #satisfying #percussion #drums

Do you love all the parts of you? My hands are not conventionally beautiful but my husband tells me regularly that I have the most beautiful hands he’s ever seen; he says: “cause they MAKE stuff!” 😊 My hands are working hands that are constantly creating with clay and glazes most hours of any day. It can be very rough on hands and nails. And on top of it I have genetically short nails that I cut even shorter for working with clay (remember when Megan Fox’s toe-shaped thumbs got all that attention? You may not, but I do because she has the same stub thumb gene I have. 👍 ) Once in a while I get a comment on my posts that my hands and nails are ugly, they say the art is beautiful but too bad the hands ruin it. I’m usually just puzzled at why someone stops scrolling and puts in effort to say something unkind to a stranger. But the truth is that I really really love my hands. I feel grateful for them. And I don’t want to start being shy or scared about showing them here to you because of an occasional rude comment. Hiding my hands from you would definitely hamper my ability to share what I do… My heart smiles when someone makes a kind comment referencing the soulful beauty of the artist’s worn hands- those hands that are covered in clay or paint or stained with ink, transforming the mind’s imagination and creativity into something real. If YOU’VE ever had something you been made to feel self-conscious about, join me in embracing it (and me giving you an enthusiastic thumbs up!) 🤗 ❤️👍 The video for today shows the pottery art process, created by hand… and lavender plants pressed into clay, and the addition of a tiny bee sculpture. These are two of my favorite things in the garden- beautiful fragrant lavender with its intricately textured leaves, and the busy bee always hard at work. I admire the bee for its focus and determination and I find myself drawn to watch them in the garden. As usual, this ceramic piece is sculpted by hand, colored, coated with ceramic glaze and fired in my pottery kiln. The gold accent on the rim is real gold, applied by hand and also fired in the kiln in a separate process. #artistsoninstagram #handmadeart #lavender #clay

For this latest batch of small bowls, I’ve used three different stoneware clay bodies, a smooth high iron body, a grogged pink and a darker, brown-black body, (these last two I’ve blended with 50% of my usual stoneware to make them smooth enough to throw and trim comfortably).   These are highly time intensive to trim, like I mention in this video, I reckon 70% of the work, time wise, is spent during this stage when the clay has dried out and the rough shapes are turned into the more angular, pedestal-footed forms. The throwing on the other hand is easy as these are made with plenty of excess in the foot, which makes them trivial to shape and lift off the wheel and in fact I do so a little messily as I know I’ll be able to fully correct them once leather hard.   With that being said, throwing the CORRECT internal shape is key as it means when I trim the shape from the outside, I can be consistent time and time again as I’m working to the same form. If the internal shapes differ, then I can’t necessarily always trim the same shape on the exterior without potentially making thin spots or ending up with a foot-ring that’s taller or shorter. Thus, just as much effort is spent making sure the inside shape is ‘right’ as compared to say, pulling up the rim so it’s just beside my throwing gauge’s pointer.   #pottery #wheelthrownpottery #handmade #craft #ceramics
