Remembering country music singer, fiddler, and promoter Roy Claxton Acuff, born on September 15, 1903, in Maynardville, Tennessee – he died on November 23, 1992. Known as the "King of Country Music," Acuff is often credited with moving the genre from its early string band and "hoedown" format to the star singer-based format that helped make it internationally successful. Acuff began his music career in the 1930s, and gained regional fame as the singer and fiddler for his group, the Smoky Mountain Boys. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1938, and although his popularity as a musician waned in the late 1940s, he remained one of the Opry's key figures and promoters for nearly four decades. In 1942, Acuff co-founded the first major Nashville-based country music publishing company—Acuff-Rose Music—which signed acts such as Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and The Everly Brothers. In 1962, Acuff became the first living inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame. (Wiki) #RoyAcuff #countrymusic #grandoleopry #countrymusichalloffame #acuffrose #dimestoreradio

Roy Acuff, the “King of Country Music,” brought country out of the holler and onto the big stage. A Grand Ole Opry star from 1938 and co-founder of Acuff-Rose Music, he gave voice to hits like “Wabash Cannonball” and “The Great Speckled Bird,” shaping the sound of Nashville forever. Roy Acuff didn’t write “Wabash Cannonball.” He just made it so completely his own that most people assumed he did. The song existed in various folk forms for decades before Acuff recorded it in 1936. What he brought was a vocal authority and a warmth that transformed a wandering folk melody into something that felt like home. The Grand Ole Opry embraced it immediately and it became one of the most requested songs in the show’s early history, helping establish both Acuff and the Opry as pillars of American country music. It became one of the best-selling country singles of the pre-chart era and Acuff’s signature song for the rest of his life. He performed it thousands of times and it never wore out its welcome once. Roy Acuff - “Great Speckled Bird” The subject of this week’s video is Roy Acuff. Here he belts out a rendition of “Great Speckled Bird” on an episode of the Wilburn Brothers Show that aired on January 31, 1969. Acuff was born in 1903 in a town called Maynardville, Tennessee. As he explored music into his adult years, he became employed by a traveling medicine show. Back in the early 1900s, salesmen traveled about the US peddling cures for all sorts of ailments such as chronic pain, headaches, kidney troubles, and really whatever else a potential customer needed relief from. These snake-oil salesman needed entertainment to draw people in, and for one troupe Roy Acuff was that entertainment. This is how Roy began his career as a professional musician, long before people began to call him “The King of Country Music.” This song in particular played a large role in Roy’s eventual stardom. Supposedly, the tune was originally composed by a minister named Guy Smith, hence the religious lyrics and imagery. The song reached a band called The Black Shirts, and when Roy heard them sing their version of Great Speckled Bird, he introduced himself and offered them 50 cents for the tune. The song quickly became a crowd favorite, and when Roy Acuff and The Crazy Tennesseans played it at the Grand Ole Opry 1938, they received overwhelmingly positive feedback in the form of “bushel baskets” of fan mail. Not too long after, Roy began a residency at the Opry. ⛪️ 🇺🇸 Roy Acuff, Hank Williams and June Carter singing “I Saw the Light” 🕯️ 💡 . Did you know that “I Saw the Light” was written by the legendary Hank Williams Sr. during a return trip from a concert? Inspired by his mother’s remark upon arriving in Montgomery, Alabama, Hank penned this country gospel classic. Recorded in his first session for MGM Records and released in September 1948, “I Saw the Light” didn’t achieve major success initially. However, it soon became one of Hank’s most beloved songs and a staple closing number at his live shows. Over time, it transformed into a country gospel standard, covered by countless artists across genres. AllMusic hails it as one of Williams’ finest songs, showcasing his deep religious conviction.
