Ruby update 🧡 She had her vet visit yesterday with @travelersrestanimalhospital and we’re feeling hopeful! After everything we shared about Ruby, we were preparing for the worst. But she surprised all of us. Ruby is doing remarkably well considering where she came from. She’s settled into foster care beautifully, and on exam, most of her body systems are functioning normally. Even more encouraging - her heart sounds are clear with no murmur. That’s something we didn’t expect. But there are still very real medical concerns we need to address. Ruby has a bilateral wheeze in her lungs, likely from her heartworm disease. The mammary masses are present on both sides, with the right side larger and more concerning in texture. There is also a lesion on her dewclaw that will need to be removed. Her heartworm treatment will follow a slow-kill protocol, which means activity restriction and careful monitoring of her breathing. We are also planning a combined surgery - spay, mammary mass removal, and dewclaw amputation. Because of her heartworm disease, anesthesia does carry increased risk, but the absence of a heart murmur is a positive sign in her favor. This is a long road. A complicated one. But for the first time, it feels like a road worth taking. Ruby isn’t just surviving. She’s resting, decompressing, and starting to feel safe. And now, she has a real chance. You asked, and here it is… a Ruby update!! The combination of medicine and changing her food has made a huge difference since Saturday. Today she even laid on the couch and chewed on a nylabone for a while! As you can tell by her face, she just finished her din din and meds. We’re so glad her appetite is back and she is enjoying her new food. We’re thrilled to see her starting to feel better! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 ➡️ Now, while we’re here together enjoying this moment, let’s chat! The two videos we recently posted of little Miss Ruby have gained quite a bit of attention and we’ve accidentally gotten something like 700 new Facebook followers in less than a week. 😳 To put it in context, that’s about half of what we average in a YEAR. So… WOW 😍 and welcome! We just entered our third year of rescue intake and so appreciate all of the support on the videos. There was some negativity, which is to be expected with anything posted online, but one comment in particular came up time and time again in both videos, so we’d love to address it. Folks kept saying, “Stop recording and pick her up and hold her!” Two things: 1. When Ruby’s guts are churning and burning she does NOT want to be held. We’ve held her in the past thinking it would soothe her and she squirmed to be set down, so we respect her preferences. We’re not cruelly withholding love and affection from her. 2. We weren’t “making content” and neither of those videos were recorded for social media. The first video was for our vice president and the second video was to show the emergency vet and send to Ruby’s primary vet. [Sidenote: Ironically, the videos we DO record specifically for social media get no likes. Our content ain’t contenting, ok? 😆 This was just real life.] Anyway, we decided to post the videos because, as a 501c3 public charity, we do rely on support from the public to care for these babies, so it’s important to share what is going on if we are seeking donations, or as one commenter said, “begging online.” It’s our absolute honor to humble ourselves before the public and beg online.
