Judy Garland as DOROTHY Gale, Billie Burke as GLINDA, the Good Witch of the North and Margaret Hamilton as the WICKED Witch of the West in the musical fantasy film “THE WIZARD OF OZ” (1939). In the original book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” (1900) by American author — L. Frank BAUM (1856-1919), Dorothy’s MAGIC slippers are SILVER. However, the filmmakers of the movie adaptation decided to change the color to RUBY RED (with sequins) to take advantage of the new TECHNICOLOR film process. The MGM’s chief COSTUME DESIGNER of the movie — GILBERT ADRIAN (1903-1959) was responsible for the final design. He made several pairs, though the exact number is unknown. Five pairs are known to have survived; one pair was stolen from a museum in 2005 and recovered in 2018. Over the years, the ruby red shoes have become one of the most ICONIC parts of the film HISTORY and of American CULTURE.
