The song doesn’t feature any samples as it was programmed on a Oberheim DMX synthesizer with vocal punctuations mixed in. Inspiration for the song struck when Run studied Kurtis Blow style of rapping and decided he too must tell stories in his raps in order to have a wider appeal. Upon completion, this was the song that convinced Russell Simmons to work with the group.
