Ryan Reynolds (October 23, 1976 - 2026) Ryan Reynolds may be one of Hollywood’s most beloved and “bankable” stars today, but his journey began on the rainy streets of Vancouver in a way that was anything but glamorous. 1. A Modest Beginning in Vancouver (1976 - 1990) Ryan was born on October 23, 1976, in Vancouver, Canada, as the youngest of four brothers. His father, James, was a food wholesaler, and his mother, Tammy, worked in retail. His household was strictly disciplined; with two of his older brothers being police officers, the atmosphere at home was often intense. As a young boy, Ryan was incredibly shy and struggled with anxiety. He once mentioned in an interview, “I was such an anxious kid that I would try to make myself invisible.” He developed his sharp sense of humor as a defense mechanism to diffuse tension and protect himself. 2. First Roles and Early Disappointments (1991 - 1996) He started acting at the age of 13. His first big break was a teen soap opera called “Hillside” (known as Fifteen in the U.S.). However, after the show ended, he had to move back to Vancouver and work the graveyard shift at a grocery store. He nearly quit acting altogether until a friend convinced him to pack his bags and move to Los Angeles. 3. Los Angeles and the “Beater” Jeep (1997 - 2004) Ryan and his friend arrived in L.A. in a beat-up 1990 Jeep. The car was in such bad shape that the doors wouldn’t even lock. His breakthrough came with the 1998 sitcom “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.” This role put him on the map and led to cult comedy hits like Van Wilder. 4. The Slump and the “Green Lantern” Disaster (2005 - 2011) Ryan’s career wasn’t always a smooth climb. His entry into the superhero genre was initially a disaster. The 2011 film “Green Lantern” was panned by critics and failed at the box office. While it nearly derailed his career, it had one silver lining: it was where he met the love of his life, Blake Lively.
