How often do you practice your safety skills if you freedive? This is your gentle reminder to practice, and remember that buddy safetying looks and feels a lot different in the pool compared to the ocean - buoyancy is very different and different access to help and flotation is likely. Some tips for pool Black-out buddy training: 1 - let the lifeguard know it’s a drill so they don’t panic ;) 2 - practice wearing what you’d be wearing - eg on deck I’d have no goggles or nose clip on. So I don’t use it to practice my rescue. 3 - when you get to your buddy (at bottom) take the time to remove their weight - once you’re at the surface you’ll notice that it takes effort to keep airways up unless you’re very buoyant, and I think it’s worse to dunk a buddy after they have their airway out of the water than to take 2-5 seconds longer to take off their weight. (There’s a greater risk of them starting to breath and inhaling water - secondary drowning) 4 - related to above know where you’re buddy wears weight and how to get it off… neck weight and or belt? 5 - if you’re small like me a push off the bottom goes a long way to get you towards the surface. 6 - practice removing equipment, dosey do, blow tap talk, all the stuff… see if you would need to move to a lane rope or the side of the pool to support yourself. Or if you have a strong enough egg beater kick to keep your buddies airway up while using both hands to address their needs. 7 - try a few things, find what works for you, and practice!

I've been blessed to have had close friend @aj_natural_studio here in Tulum for a few weeks. He kindly put this edit together for me without my knowledge. It actually shows how I spend most of my days... Following fellow divers down and up the line. Coaching, supporting, & safetying.. . Comment 🙌🏽 if this is how you prefer to hang out with your friends too 😂 (Although first vid is actually from a freediving afterparty 😆). Before you say there is nobody safetying, we’re doing breath holds that are only 50% of max capacity! We’ve started doing a few rounds of easy breath holds (my fave is 3 breath holds until first contraction) at the start of each training and it’s making the session so much more enjoyable! 😊 We’ve kind of been making stuff up as we go along. I have learnt that if you can keep yourself in a state of mild discomfort, that’s how you achieve the most progress. Doing big dives or maxes every time is unproductive because it just overloads the nervous system and can cause you to develop resistance towards the training!
