This quote is a call to reclaim a sacramental way of seeing, where daily life (prayer, work, suffering, and especially the Eucharist: “we eat God”) becomes the place of communion with God rather than an obstacle to it. St. Joseph the Hesychast (1897–1959) was a Greek Orthodox monk and ascetic who became one of the great modern teachers of hesychasm, the life of inner stillness and ceaseless prayer. After early years marked by intense spiritual longing, he embraced the monastic life and pursued strict asceticism in remote caves and sketes of Mount Athos, enduring extreme hardship as he sought purity of heart through repentance and the Jesus Prayer. Over time he gathered a small brotherhood and became a discerning spiritual father, forming monks who later renewed Athonite monasticism and guided many throughout the Orthodox world. Near the end of his life he moved from the solitude of the desert to more communal settings to help strengthen monastic communities, leaving behind letters and counsels renowned for their sobriety, warmth, and spiritual depth.
