Originally built in 1931, the historic @serinegara.kl was the hallowed home where the Federation of Malaya Agreement and Independence Agreement were signed. After decades of repurposing and dilapidation, the colonial estate has been restored to its former glory under the careful supervision of @khazanahnasional’s Dana Warisan vehicle. From a grandly recreated main staircase to a humble century-old manhole cover, the esteemed venue and its period charms, once reserved for Malaysian society’s highest echelons, can now be freely viewed by the general public. This building in KL has had so many lives - and it saw defining milestones of the nation’s history, such as the signing of the Federation of Malaya Agreement in 1948 and the Independence Agreement in 1957. I really enjoyed the video at the start as it helped shape the context of the road to independence. Situated discreetly along Jalan Stonor, the newly restored Seri Negara stands as a graceful reminder of Kuala Lumpur’s layered past. Once the official residence of the Selangor State Secretary during the British administration, the mansion has been meticulously revived, its cream façade, timber shutters, and sweeping verandahs glowing softly under the tropical sun. Stepping through its doors feels like entering another era — polished wooden floors creak gently beneath your feet, while high ceilings and vintage fittings evoke the elegance of a bygone colonial age amid the modern skyline of Kuala Lumpur. The guided tour is both engaging and deeply informative. Our guide shared vivid stories of the house’s early 20th-century origins, its architectural nuances, and the lives of those who once resided within its stately rooms. Original design elements — from patterned floor tiles to restored balustrades — were carefully preserved, revealing craftsmanship rarely seen today. Archival photographs displayed along the corridors offered fascinating glimpses into Malaya’s administrative history, while thoughtful conservation efforts highlighted how heritage and sustainability can coexist beautifully. What makes a day trip to Seri Negara especially meaningful is its quiet intimacy. Unlike larger museums, the experience feels personal, almost contemplative. As we lingered on the airy verandah overlooking manicured lawns, the city’s bustle seemed to fade away. After years of waiting, this historic hilltop mansion in Kuala Lumpur is finally open to the public as a museum and gallery! 🏛️🖼️ This is Carcosa Seri Negara, a famous KL heritage building near Lake Gardens. The main house, Carcosa, was built in 1896–1898 as the residence of Sir Frank Swettenham, the first Resident General of the Federated Malay States. Later, Seri Negara was added in 1913 as a government guest house. The mansion was designed by A B Hubback, the same architect behind KL Railway Station and Masjid Jamek, making it one of the city’s iconic colonial era buildings. Before independence in 1957, important constitutional discussions took place here. After independence, it became a state guest house for visiting leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II in 1986. From the late 1980s until around 2015, it was a luxury heritage hotel before closing for restoration. Now it’s reopened as a museum and gallery. Fun fact, this place was also used as one of the filming locations for Crazy Rich Asians (2018). Entry is free with reservation, and guided tours share the mansion’s history and its role in Malaysia’s independence. Definitely a must-visit for anyone into KL heritage, colonial architecture, and historic museums. Jamek Mosque, officially Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers and may be accessed via Jalan Tun Perak. The mosque was designed by British architect and soldier Arthur Benison Hubback, and built in 1909. It was the principal mosque of Kuala Lumpur until the construction of the national mosque Masjid Negara in 1965. The name “Jamek” is the Malay equivalent of the Arabic word jāmiʿ (جامع) meaning a place where people congregate to worship. It is also referred to as “Friday Mosque” by the locals. Kuala Lumpur, 31 January 2026 — Khazanah Nasional Berhad marked the opening of Block 1 of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building (BSAS) Complex following the completion of 11 months of conservation and restoration works under Dana Warisan, an initiative of Warisan Kuala Lumpur (Warisan KL). The restoration reflects Khazanah’s commitment to safeguarding one of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic landmarks while reactivating it as a vibrant heritage destination. Formerly known as the Secretariat Building and later renamed in honour of Sultan Abdul Samad, the building occupies a prominent place in the city’s architectural and historical landscape, having borne witness to defining moments in Kuala Lumpur’s past and its evolution over time. As the first completed phase of the wider BSAS Complex restoration, Block 1 retains its designation as a Category 1 National Heritage site while enhancing safety, accessibility and the overall visitor experience. The refreshed spaces now house immersive galleries, a visitor centre, craft and retail areas, event venues and curated F&B offerings. Open to the public from 2 February, the galleries welcome visitors daily from 9am to 6pm, with complimentary admission to the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery for the first month. #visitingmalaysia2026 #sultanabdulsamadbuilding

I still remember when i met the @mythinkcity team. They were talking about restoring this building @bsas.kl and I immediately said “Seronoknya kerja you.” Kalau nak tahu, ThinkCity memang banyak buat kerja-kerja restoration macam ni, bringing old buildings back to life.
