This is the story of a brutal 1800s job where sailors threw massive cow hides off cliffs… then fought through crashing waves to haul them onto ships. And it actually happened right here. Richard Henry Dana Jr. didn’t just witness it—he did it. In the 1830s, he was in the water, dragging heavy, soaked hides through the surf to ships waiting offshore. Those hides were valuable cargo, shipped all the way to Boston. Dana was a Harvard dropout who only spent about 10 days here… But he later wrote Two Years Before the Mast, and it became a massive hit—giving people their first real look at California. And this place? Found where the land and sea intersect, Coastal Sand Dunes are exposed to crashing waves and strong winds. These conditions push and blow sand towards the land and deposit the sediment into mounds with vegetation. The plants that live in coastal sand dunes are adapted to living in a place where there is constant change. There are many rare species that live in these ecosystems, such as pink sand-verbena, silky beach pea, Edwards’ beach and sand-verbena moths. The large sand dune across from Thornhill Broome Beach in Point Mugu is the result of "Aeolian transport," or the wind's movement of sand. It's quite steep, but your efforts will be rewarded with beautiful views.
