The best decision we ever made was adding sliding sash windows to our home! They perfectly complement the traditional charm of our period property while bringing in so much natural light. When I announced we were planning to restore our sash windows I received a lot of feedback. Most people thought we were crazy to not just get new windows. We decided to restore for many reasons. First & most importantly, we felt the old wooden sash windows were lovely & worth restoring. We also were blown away at the astronomical cost to replace them. I’m a UPVC convert, THERE I SAID IT! Who knew UPVC windows could look so damn good? All the look of a lovely traditional timber sash window, but with heaps of added benefits. Changing windows is one of those huge house expenses that you put off… until you realise how much difference it makes. Not just to how your home looks, but to the warmth, the drafts, the heating bill — everything. I still laugh (and slightly shiver) thinking about the flat I lived in during university. It had single-glazed sash windows, and when my mum came over from Latvia she could not get her head around how I was surviving in that cold room. She kept asking, “How are you living like this?!” So when it came to our own home, replacing the old PVC windows was right at the top of the list. And honestly? Going with a Polish company for the second time was the best decision. Their quality is just on another level — and the quote came back at half the price of the local companies. Half! They even recreated that tiny original curve in the sash design, which made my renovation-loving heart so happy. The only thing to know is that installation is a big extra cost, and you’ll need to organise your own installer or get your builder to do it (usually cheaper). But the windows arrived fully painted in our RAL colour, architraves and windowsills included, which made everything feel so easy and seamless. Lots of questions recently about our windows. They’re aluclad sliding sash with the off white grained effect from Munster Joinery. They’re 1150 x 1900mm. We had the splayed effect created after the build which a lot of people don’t realise is possible. It’s just a bit more work internally. I love them but there are a few things to consider if you’re thinking of getting them. They’re quite heavy to open from the bottom. They let so much light in but because the kids and Gerry can sit on the splay ledge they leave a lot of marks on both the wood and the glass. Gerry will also jump in from outside if they’re open enough😅 I’d still get them again though so I suppose that says a lot! AD. The sash windows in my son’s room were a real mess. However, I knew that with a little bit of DIY work and by dressing them up, I could elongate their life and make them look a whole lot better! After sanding back the sash window frames, filling any problem areas, priming them and painting them blue, I replaced the rusty old hardware with some beautiful new window furniture from @corstonarchitecturaldetail . Designed and engineered in the UK and made from real solid brass, I already have Corston Architectural Detail knobs on all of my kitchen cabinets, so I knew the quality was amazing. This time, I went for the polished nickel finish for the window fasteners, stops and lifts, as they will stay looking shiny and new without the need for any metal treatments or buffing further down the line. I loved the finish next to the soft blue the windows were now painted in and their bright and sparkly look elevated the old timber frames. To finish, I added some new curtains and a DIY pelmet, and this is the final look! I am so happy with how they came out and that I’ve managed to preserve one of the older features of my period home. 5 TIPS WHEN BUYING SASH WINDOWS… 1. Sapele & Accoya should be the only go to timber when building sash windows based on their durability, rot resistance and overall quality of longevity 2. Be mindful of shiny brochures as the timber made from abroad is usually made or laminated softwood which is not designed to last in British weather. Way to often do I get calls to repair sills and windows in new joinery less than 10 years old 3. Glazing is extremely important and if you’re not using warm edge spacer bars, soft coat or toughened glass then you’ll have a unit destined to fail or not even comply to regulations. We like to use 16mm units for conservation areas but for FENSA regulations you need to use 24mm units with Argon gas to comply to the U-Values 4. Although you do get a lot of longevity with new sprayed box frames, more often it’s acceptable to repurpose the old box frames and just insert new hardwood sashes in which can save the original timber which is more than likely old growth pine which has last over 100 years(it’s basically hardwood with the tightness of the grain) 5. Imported windows tend to be finger-jointed which is far inferior to the traditional mortise and tenon method. It’s not question that building it how it was originally built should be the way it’s done. Full stop!
