Sashiko started as a tough, practical way to make fabric stronger, and Edo-era firefighters took it to another level. They wore thick, quilted cotton coats stitched over and over with sashiko, and soaked them in water before running into burning buildings. When wet, those coats could weigh 20–30 kilos / 40–60+ pounds….! Have you tried Sashiko Weaving? I’m massively into sewing (which is how I got into bookbinding). I studied textiles at Glasgow School of Art before detouring to the world of fine art and eventually into bookbinding. It’s been a journey! My art practice takes a tradition and then I twist it into something new. I learned Sashiko, first to mend clothes (its original use) and then started to work with stitch on paper. I used a super simple template to create this weave. There’s a few different patterns you can try with the same template. I really love the mathematics and geometry in some of the patterns. There’s also a version called Boro which is less ordered. But as I’m a ruler girlie, and bookbinding is so unforgiving if you just guess 🤣. If you’d like this template, it’s included in my Sashiko Books Course, which has 3 patterns to make alongside self paced video tutorials. It’s a great way to embellish your soft cover books with. You could also do hardcover books this way, I didn’t really fancy all the heavy punching for that one though. Maybe I should get myself a paper drill.
