Working Scent Detection Foundations with a High Memory dog…

Working Scent Detection Foundations with a High Memory dog… When it comes to foundations we often have to work on skills in repetitions, however when you have a high memory dog you could find yourself reinforcing your dog’s memory and not their search because they appear to flawlessly go straight to the odour… What is important is to be-able to read your dog and know when they are successful due to memory or if they are successful due to their scenting and how to problem solve that when they are using memory. This is one of the many topics we cover in our Scent Detection courses.. Do you have a high memory dog that needs some skills sharpened? Not sure if they are searching or remembering? Drop us a dm and we will guide you to one of our courses 🐶 #scentwaysnz #dogtraining #highmemory #scentdetection #scentsports

Those freeze indications are coming on so nicely😍 Scent Detection with Charlie - practising his “freeze” to indicate that he’s found the hidden target scent Only one item in each search is scented, he is searching for the scent of Gun Oil, which we have taught him to indicate on by freezing and pointing to it with his nose Charlie is early on in his scent work journey but he’s already smashing it!

#scentdetection #nasenarbeit #anzeigetraining

Phoebe’s indication at the end gets me every time! 😂 Scentwork isn’t just fun - it’s an incredible outlet for our dogs natural instincts, builds focus and confidence, and provides powerful mental stimulation. It’s one of the most effective ways to truly tire out a dog! 🔊 Sound ON for this video! When you see (and hear) a conservation canine like JJ doing this, you’re watching a masterclass in scent processing in action. 👃🐾 What you’re hearing isn’t just a dog sniffing - it’s JJ entering a target-locked state and his rapid sniffing means high olfactory focus. 🎯 Dogs shift into this pattern when an odor becomes salient, meaning it stands out as relevant or valuable. It’s often associated with target odors or scents tied to high motivation or reward. 🎁 When a dog rapidly sniffs, they temporarily block off the normal respiratory pathway and funnel incoming air exclusively through their olfactory tract, a dedicated scent-processing channel lined with millions of odor receptors. It’s like switching from “breathing mode” to “analyze this immediately” mode. 🔬 That final “purge” you hear afterward is JJ clearing his olfactory system. Because all of that air went through his scent-processing machinery it has to be expelled separately through the nose. This shift in sniffing pattern isn’t just cool 😎, it’s behaviorally meaningful. This is one of the changes in behavior that our handlers interpret when the dog is in an active decision-making process. It's a very clear, real-time cue that the dog is close to odor source or picking up something important. So next time you see a dog go full rapid-sniff mode🐶, know that they’re not just smelling, but instead, they’re running a complex neurological analysis on the invisible world around them! 🌍✨ 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 #WD4C #WorkingDogsforConservation #WorkingDogs #DetectionDogs #Olfaction #ScentDetection #DogBehavior #Biosecurity #ConservationDogs #ConservationK9 #DogTraining

Scent detection is such great mental stimulation, while being low impact! Plus it’s just fun 🤩 And the best thing is, it’s something you can teach at home as well, super easy, especially with these scent pods from @noseandhearts !! 1️⃣ Pairing: you can use any scent you want them to find, just put it on a cotton pad, and slide it in a scent pod with something high value. Walk your dog up to the pod so they get the food, then just repeat! 2️⃣ Add Cold pods: once they’re excited about the pod, and are rushing to it when they see you take it out, you can add a 2nd pod WITHOUT the scent. Have no food on the pods to make sure they’re on the scent, not the food. Once they show interest in the correct pod, mark & reward 3️⃣ Hides: Once they’re consistently showing interest in the correct pod, start hiding them! You can walk them around the perimeter so they learn to systematically canvas the space. Once they show interest correctly, mark and reward! Introducing odour to your dog can be easy! Scent training is a lot of fun, I never thought Phil would love it as much as he does🙂‍↕️ Here is how I started him!⬇️ Please watch a video before starting scent training on odour handling. Odour handling is VERY important!! Comment if you’d like a separate video on supplies and odour handling😊 1. Place a vessel on the floor (can be a glass jar or an odour tin - the jar must have holes in the lid). 2. As soon as your dog associates with the vessel reward them. They should quickly pick up that as soon as they touch the vessel they are getting rewarded. You want to be quick with the reward at first and not to expect them to hold their nose there just yet. 3. Do this in small reputations, take a 5-10 min break in between and do it again for 1-2 minutes. Keep the sessions short and sweet to start. 4. Once your dog is understanding that you want them to put their nose on the vessel you can SLOWLY build up their hold time. This can take many sessions before getting there. 5. If at any point your dog is just looking up at you, stare away from them and don’t make direct eye contact. Wait for them to give the behaviour you want and as soon as they go back to the vessel reward them. Supplies: - Glass jar with holes or an odour tin - Q-tip with a drop of odour (starting odour is typically wintergreen) - Wintergreen odour (I purchased mine from iherb and got the NOW brand - SDDA approved) - Lots of treats, kibble etc!! If you have any questions drop them in the comments! We’d be happy to help! *please note I am in no way a trainer and am just sharing what we learned on our scent training journey* • #dogtraining #scentdetection #dogreels #training #dogtips
