We bought our school for 175,000 in 2021. (And there’s a ton more info and longer, SLOWER, less chaotic tour over on my Yt! I have never spent as many hours editing a vid as I did this one. 😅) Our school is quite small by school standards with 4 classrooms upstairs (and maybe? 4 classrooms downstairs. Still not 100% sure what the basement was used for!) The school is SUPER rural and it opened as they were closing 1 room schoolhouses in 1914. There weren’t even indoor bathrooms when it was a school! After the school closed, it was a barn, and then a former student bought it in the 1950s and turned it into her family home. By the time it came for sale again in 2021 it needed a new roof and had a lot of water damage that was causing a ton of issues. Over the last 3 years we’ve been turning it into our house! Two of my favorite rooms in the school… for very different reasons. The kitchen and living room are the only two spaces upstairs that still show the size of the original classrooms. We’re starting another big adventure… and this will be one of our biggest yet!!! We’re converting an elementary school into a multi-generational home for our family. This is the same elementary school that Kevin, Steff, Nick and Kada went to. By the time Maddie came along, there was a new school. We’re not just renovating a building. We’re preserving history, creating a gathering place, and building something that will serve us all. It won’t be easy. It won’t be fast. But it will be worth it. This is Day 1 of turning an old school into a home, a legacy, and a story we’re excited to share. Imagine waking up in a classroom… because your dad randomly bought an abandoned school and turned it into your home!

Have more in the big vid, but to summarize here: 🏫 We bought this old schoolhouse sight-unseen in 2021 while we were still living in NYC. We remembered the school from driving by when we were kids, and couldn’t believe it was actually for sale! 🏫Once we closed on the school, it took a ton of time to figure out how to fix it up. We thought it would take about two years, it ended up taking 3 and we’re still not done with some big things. (Been living in a bit of construction.) 🏫We did a ton of things (insulation, new roof, new windows) to alleviate the heating and cooling costs, and I outlined the monthly average in the video. Very curious what the monthly bills will be as we finish sealing up the windows and add in other efficiencies! 🏫We’ve had a lot of ~*discoveries*~ over the years, including animal skulls and a 72” snakeskin. My friend Doug loaned us his metal detector and we’ve found some things in the yard, but it’s mostly trash. (Unfortunately *NOT* a plaque from Arbor Day when the students were here.) 🏫Tons of folks ask about ghosts ALL THE TIME, but the adults in the house have not experienced anything yet. But the kids, who love their Halloween books, claim that there are? 🏫We have tons of projects to go, but we’re learning a lot and trying to use as many salvaged materials as possible!

Our students don’t just learn—they LEAD. They spend half the day in focused academics… and the other half learning outdoors—building real skills and real confidence. They solve problems, mentor younger students, and embrace their God-given talents. By the time they finish elementary school, they’ve already taught hundreds of other children about farm life, beekeeping, and entrepreneurship. This isn’t school like you remember. Cutest @ballerinafarm schoolhouse you ever did see! (See the before in the video at the end!) I can’t believe school is out for the summer… it always goes by so quickly. Do you have some fun summer plans? I much prefer cooler weather and the routine of fall, but some of my favorite summertime things are s’mores around the fire pit, fresh watermelon and watermelon juice, corn-on-the-cob (dripping in butter), picking raspberries and sugar sweet tomatoes straight from the vine and into my mouth, yard games like bocce ball, scatter, and corn hole, and of course the sentiment and traditions surrounding the Fourth of July.
