When a child repeatedly says, “I hate school” or “Please don’t make me go”, it’s easy to assume the problem is school itself. But clinically speaking, school refusal is rarely about disliking school - it’s about anxiety, distress, and the brain’s need for safety. Research tells us: 📌 Kids who struggle with school refusal often perceive school as emotionally or physically unsafe - even if there’s no clear external danger. Their nervous system reacts as if school is a threat, triggering a fight-or-flight response. 📌 Underlying causes matter. Studies on school refusal show that kids who refuse school often experience: 🔹 Social anxiety – Fear of judgment, embarrassment, or peer interactions. 🔹 Separation anxiety – Struggling to be away from parents or home. 🔹 Perfectionism – Fear of failure or not meeting expectations. 🔹 Sensory overload – Difficulty processing noise, crowds, or bright lights. 🔹 Emotional overwhelm – Unprocessed stress from home, friendships, or past experiences. Forcing these kids to school won’t ‘fix’ it. Anxiety-based avoidance does not resolve when a child is pushed into a triggering environment - it gets worse. Instead, gradual exposure with emotional support has been shown to be more effective. So if you’re struggling with a kid avoiding school: 1️⃣ Look for the root cause. Ask open-ended questions like “What’s the hardest part about school?” instead of dismissing their feelings. 2️⃣ Validate before problem-solving. Try something like “I hear you. School feels really tough right now. Let’s figure this out together.” 3️⃣ Work on emotional regulation. ‘They’re fine once they’re here’ is such a huge cliche amongst parents of neurodivergent children 😑 Those children who are 'school refusers'. Who beg every evening not to have to go to school the next day or who protest every morning 🚫 Schools don’t see the problems and so they assume that they aren’t happening or that there is a problem at home, or with the parenting. Those children are apparently so good at masking that schools can't pick up on the subtle signs of anxiety or dysregulation which then spill out when the child is at home 🏠 But if you are one of those parents then you know. You know that your child can't be fine when they are there. So you fight, and you'll carry on fighting until someone listens, because that's what we have to do 💙 But, wow, is it tough. I was a big believer in public schools until my kids started hating school and begging not to go. Both my husband and I were public school kids. That’s what we wanted for our kids… My oldest daughter said, “But Mom, at school we do all the things you say aren’t good for us…. We don’t go outside much, we don’t eat good food, we don’t move our bodies enough, and we spend a lot of time on screens.” Man, what a smart girl to point out that school was working against all of the things I was trying to teach at home! 🥹 Happy to report that after pulling my kids out of school they are happier, they have no anxiety, and their confidence is higher. Here’s how you can support them: 💡 5 Steps to Help with School Refusal 1️⃣ Start with Empathy Validate their feelings: 🗣️ “I can see that school feels overwhelming for you right now. I’m here to help.” 2️⃣ Uncover the Root Cause Is it anxiety? Social struggles? Fear of failure? Work with your child to understand what’s behind their avoidance. 3️⃣ Take Small Steps Forward Help them build momentum. This might mean starting with half days, meeting with a counselor, or even visiting the school building outside of hours. 4️⃣ Collaborate with the School Talk to their teacher, school counselor, or administrator to create a supportive plan—like adjusted schedules, safe spaces, or extra check-ins. 5️⃣ Celebrate Progress No step is too small to celebrate! We unschool for so many reasons, like the fact that my youngest has ADHD and school supports are laughable. I’ve included a few in this video, but there are many many other reasons.
