When a child repeatedly says, “I hate school” or “Please don’t make me go”, it’s easy to assume the problem is school itself. But clinically speaking, school refusal is rarely about disliking school - it’s about anxiety, distress, and the brain’s need for safety. Research tells us: 📌 Kids who struggle with school refusal often perceive school as emotionally or physically unsafe - even if there’s no clear external danger. Their nervous system reacts as if school is a threat, triggering a fight-or-flight response. 📌 Underlying causes matter. Studies on school refusal show that kids who refuse school often experience: 🔹 Social anxiety – Fear of judgment, embarrassment, or peer interactions. 🔹 Separation anxiety – Struggling to be away from parents or home. 🔹 Perfectionism – Fear of failure or not meeting expectations. 🔹 Sensory overload – Difficulty processing noise, crowds, or bright lights. 🔹 Emotional overwhelm – Unprocessed stress from home, friendships, or past experiences. Forcing these kids to school won’t ‘fix’ it. Anxiety-based avoidance does not resolve when a child is pushed into a triggering environment - it gets worse. Instead, gradual exposure with emotional support has been shown to be more effective. So if you’re struggling with a kid avoiding school: 1️⃣ Look for the root cause. Ask open-ended questions like “What’s the hardest part about school?” instead of dismissing their feelings. 2️⃣ Validate before problem-solving. Try something like “I hear you. School feels really tough right now. Let’s figure this out together.” 3️⃣ Work on emotional regulation. Teach coping strategies like deep breathing and grounding techniques so they feel more in control. 🧚‍♀️ FOLLOW for more. ‘They’re fine once they’re here’ is such a huge cliche amongst parents of neurodivergent children 😑 Those children who are 'school refusers'. Who beg every evening not to have to go to school the next day or who protest every morning 🚫 Schools don’t see the problems and so they assume that they aren’t happening or that there is a problem at home, or with the parenting. Those children are apparently so good at masking that schools can't pick up on the subtle signs of anxiety or dysregulation which then spill out when the child is at home 🏠 But if you are one of those parents then you know. You know that your child can't be fine when they are there. So you fight, and you'll carry on fighting until someone listens, because that's what we have to do 💙 But, wow, is it tough. Have you had this fight? Are you having it now? 💬 Sending strength 💪 #schoolavoidance #schoolrefusal #schoolrefuser #cantnotwont #notaschoolskiver #schoolattendance #notfineinschool #squarepegroundhole #autisticchild #pdachild #pdaparenting #masking #autisticmasking #adhdchild

I was a big believer in public schools until my kids started hating school and begging not to go. Both my husband and I were public school kids. That’s what we wanted for our kids… My oldest daughter said, “But Mom, at school we do all the things you say aren’t good for us…. We don’t go outside much, we don’t eat good food, we don’t move our bodies enough, and we spend a lot of time on screens.” Man, what a smart girl to point out that school was working against all of the things I was trying to teach at home! 🥹 Happy to report that after pulling my kids out of school they are happier, they have no anxiety, and their confidence is higher. Forever grateful that we blew up our life to homeschool them! If you’ve been thinking about homeschooling, comment PODCAST for how to start! 👇🏻

🎒 What is School Refusal? And How Can You Help Your Child?

🎒 What is School Refusal? And How Can You Help Your Child? School refusal is more than just not wanting to go to school. It’s an extreme form of avoidance caused by underlying emotional distress like anxiety, fear, or overwhelm. 😔 🛑 What School Refusal IS: • An intense difficulty attending school due to emotional distress. • Often linked to anxiety, fear of separation, bullying, academic stress, or social struggles. • A sign your child is struggling, not defiant. ✅ What School Refusal is NOT: • Laziness or rebellion. • A refusal to follow rules. • Something your child can just “snap out of.” If this sounds like your child, know that school refusal is a cry for help, not bad behavior. Here’s how you can support them: 💡 5 Steps to Help with School Refusal 1️⃣ Start with Empathy Validate their feelings: 🗣️ “I can see that school feels overwhelming for you right now. I’m here to help.” 2️⃣ Uncover the Root Cause Is it anxiety? Social struggles? Fear of failure? Work with your child to understand what’s behind their avoidance. 3️⃣ Take Small Steps Forward Help them build momentum. This might mean starting with half days, meeting with a counselor, or even visiting the school building outside of hours. 4️⃣ Collaborate with the School Talk to their teacher, school counselor, or administrator to create a supportive plan—like adjusted schedules, safe spaces, or extra check-ins. 5️⃣ Celebrate Progress No step is too small to celebrate! Praise their efforts, and remind them that every little win gets them closer to success. 💬 Pro Tip: Create a calming morning routine that sets the tone for the day—like stretching, deep breathing, or listening to music. 📚 School refusal is challenging, but with patience, empathy, and the right strategies, you can help your child feel confident and safe again. 💛 Follow @school_counselor_mama for more tips on navigating tough parenting moments and supporting your child’s emotional health. 🙌 #School #schoolrefusal #parentingtips #kidsmentalhealthmatters #kidsmentalhealth #childpsychology #schoolcounselor #schoolcounseling

School refusal is not laziness. It’s often anxiety. Some children don’t hate learning. They fear separation. They fear failure. They fear being judged. When a child says “I don’t want to go to school, listen for what they’re not saying. I’m a public school teacher… and I would never send my kids to public school. Before you come for me, hear me out. Every day, I see kids being bullied mercilessly—physically, emotionally, and online. And too often, nothing is done. Schools are overwhelmed, teachers are stretched thin, and kids are slipping through the cracks. The stats don’t lie: Only 33% of fourth graders in America are proficient in reading. That means two-thirds of our kids are struggling with the most fundamental skill they need for life. I know what’s happening inside the system. I see the burnout, the broken policies, and the kids who need more than what public school can offer. That’s why I homeschool. Not because it’s easy, but because I refuse to let my kids become another statistic. Comment “snag” 👇 if you want to homeschool without leaving your job. If you feel this, if you’re questioning your options—you are not alone. There is another way. 🩷

We unschool for so many reasons, like the fact that my youngest has ADHD and school supports are laughable. I’ve included a few in this video, but there are many many other reasons. Plus, I was a teacher so I’ve seen a lot and I know a lot first hand. None of which made me confident in the education or the introduction to life that my kids would receive. So here we are and I love sharing about it! Comment UNSCHOOL if you’re curious because there is so much to know! Maybe it’s what you’ve been looking for. #unschooling #unschooled

The truth is, the public school system was built to create conformity, compliance, and predictability—traits ideal for factory workers. Is that really what we want for our kids? People are waking up and are ready to get off the conveyor belt. Homeschooling offers something public education simply can’t: the freedom to nurture creativity, foster curiosity, and instill the values that matter most to our families. Imagine your child growing up not just with knowledge but with the confidence to pursue their God-given purpose. Instead of memorizing irrelevant facts for standardized tests, they could be discovering their unique talents, mastering life skills, and learning to think critically in a way that glorifies God and leads them closer to sainthood. Why settle for a system that stifles potential when we can give our kids so much more? Let’s raise dreamers, leaders, and saints—children prepared not to survive the world’s grind but to transform it. It’s time to do things differently. ➡️ Comment “EBOOK” if you’re ready to cut the cord on the public school system and start homeschooling.

From School Refuser To GCSE Pass 🌟 Tallulah had been told she would probably fail most of her GCSEs. After a really tough time in mainstream school and struggling with school refusal, confidence was at rock bottom. By the time her mum reached out to Spark, it was already May. There were just six weeks to turn things around. She wasn’t passing English. So they doubled down - two sessions a week, focused support, and a tutor carefully matched to her needs. Little by little, belief started to build. The hard work paid off. She passed. Now, her brother Isaac - who also wasn’t on track to pass Maths and English - has been with Spark for two months and has just passed his mocks too. Two children. Two turnarounds. We’ve helped over 3,000 students rebuild confidence and prove that it’s never too late to change the outcome.
