In this 2016 masterclass on Schubert’s well-known Impromptu in G-flat major, Sir András asks Martin James Bartlett to sing the melody while accompanying himself with the bass at the piano. The exercise recalls the rigorous training Sir András himself received at the Liszt Academy of Music, where György Kurtág demanded that his students sing and accompany themselves in Schubert’s Lieder! There is also a practical clue in the score about the expected flow of the tempo, since Franz Schubert marks the passage alla breve —indeed, double alla breve. ✍🏻 Curated by: @enriquemontlaga #SirAndrásSchiff #Schubert

Experience the haunting maturity of Vladimir Horowitz at 84 years old. 🎹✨ Recorded during his legendary 1987 return to Vienna, this performance of Schubert’s Impromptu Op. 90 No. 3 is a masterclass in “dolce” playing. Coming just a year after his historic return to Russia, this concert captures Horowitz in a unique stage of life—where youthful speed is replaced by a profound, singing tone. Listen closely to the bass notes; his piano was specially tuned to achieve this exact, rich depth. It isn’t just music; it’s a lifetime of wisdom distilled into six minutes. 🕯️🕊️ Does this performance move you? 🎶🌙 Franz Schubert – Ständchen, D. 957 No. 4 (Schwanengesang) Itzhak Perlman – violin 🎻 Rohan De Silva – piano 🎹⠀ •⠀ Schubert never knew the name of this piece. It belongs to Schwanengesang, which means Swan Song in German. It was the publisher Tobias Haslinger who gathered the composer's last fourteen songs into a single volume and named the set, drawing on the Greek myth that swans sing most beautifully before they die. The first edition came out in May 1829. Schubert never saw it in print.⠀ •⠀ The piece you just heard is a transcription. Ständchen was written for voice (tenor or soprano) and piano, in the lied format: a German song for solo voice with accompaniment. In 1838, Liszt made the solo piano version, which entered the recital repertoire throughout the 19th century. Adaptations for cello, violin, chamber ensembles and orchestra followed. Today the piece is heard more often without the voice than with it. Rellstab's text still lives inside the instrumental notes.⠀ •⠀ Itzhak Perlman and Rohan De Silva have played together for three decades. Both studied with Dorothy DeLay at Juilliard, at different times: Perlman arriving from Israel, De Silva from Sri Lanka after six years in London. This recital is from December 2013, at the Knight Concert Hall in Miami. Perlman plays sitting down, as he has since he was 4, and De Silva keeps the piano under the violin without competing for space. They play Schubert without trying to prove anything. The piece has already proved everything.⠀ • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • • • #violin #schubert #piano #classicalmusic

🎹 Yuja Wang (@yujawang.official) 🎶 SCHUBERT/LISZT Erlkönig, S. 558 📍 N/A 💬 This is just a short segment, the full recording can be found on YouTube! 📚 Erlkönig (Liszt transcription S.558) was originally composed by Schubert in 1815 (age 18) as a Lied (song) setting a dark poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe about a father riding through the night while his child is pursued by a death spirit. Liszt later transcribed it (first version ~1837, later revised) to bring the dramatic vocal narrative fully onto the piano. The work represents terror (for the pianist playing haha), urgency, and fatal inevitability, with the piano imitating galloping horse rhythms and switching characters musically. Technically, Liszt’s version is extremely demanding with its repeated octaves, wide leaps, layered voicing (melody + accompaniment + inner lines), and orchestral level dynamic control while maintaining a narrative. In conclusion, it’s one of the most dramatic and theatrically intense song transcriptions ever written, turning Schubert’s narrative into a full explosion of virtuosity. 🔔please consider following @pianoworld.daily for more piano content like this! 🙂👍🙏🙏 . . . . #piano #classicalmusic #pianoworlddaily #liszt #schubert

Happy birthday to Luciano Pavarotti, who would have turned 90 today🎶 We’re celebrating him by looking back at his iconic 1994 Three Tenors performance of Schubert’s Ave Maria in LA✨ #Pavarotti #Opera #Schubert #AveMaria #OperaSinger

🐎💨A father, a child, a galloping horse in the dark, and a voice that will not let you go. 🎹Fun Fact:💡 Schubert’s “Erlkönig,” in Liszt’s solo piano version, is one of the most chilling stories ever put into music. Based on Goethe’s poem, it follows a desperate night ride. A terrified child hearing the Elfking whisper in his ear, a father trying to calm him, and the brutal silence when they finally reach the courtyard. In this performance, Evgeny Kissin turns Liszt’s transcription into a full one man drama. The relentless right hand triplets become the horse’s heartbeat, while his voicing shifts between the narrator, the father, the child, and the Elfking each with a different color and weight. You can almost feel the air change every time the Erlkönig “speaks.” This is not just a virtuoso piece. It is a five minute psychological thriller where the ending still hurts even when you know…death is coming. 🎧Watch Kissin’s “Erlkönig” with headphones, in the dark if you dare, and tell me at which moment did you first feel your chest tighten.
