Why is Red Dye 40 not banned? Because science is based on evidence, not vibes. Not only is it not banned, it has been deemed safe by experts globally. Red No. 40? Official name is Allura Red AC. In Europe, it’s E129. In US, Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan, Red 40 has the EXACT SAME acceptable daily intake: 7 mg per kg body weight per day. Anti-science activists like EWG, Consumer Reports, RFK Jr, Casey and Calley Means, Vani Hari (Food Babe), and MAHA allies are not scientific experts. They do LOVE undermining science and health for profit. Is the US food supply riddled with “toxic” food colorings? No. Are food dyes causing health issues? NO. Definitely not at levels we would actually be exposed to them. Replacements for Red 40 like cochineal are NOT better. Cochineal is extracted from scale insects that live on cacti. Cochineal has higher risk of allergic reactions, is ecologically damaging, incredibly expensive, and less studied. This rhetoric uses chemophobia and the appeal to nature fallacy. But it doesn’t improve health. If we actually want to talk about what WOULD improve health, let’s talk access to AFFORDABLE fresh foods for EVERYONE, not just those who are wealthy. Scientist does not mean researcher or staying in academia 🫶 I’ve been going through the archives lately remembering my past life as a researcher 🥹 part of me misses research, I can feel my love for science as I look back on these clips, how excited I was just to be welcome in the space I used to dream I’d get to spend my days in🔬 And while I value everything I learned from my time in research, I’ve been able to have a much bigger impact on science now I’ve left research. Because what does science research actually impact if the science never leaves the lab? If it doesn’t go on to help make a medicine, if the public doesn’t understand what they’ve been paying for, if we don’t teach the next generation about science, if we keep all the scientists locked away in the ivory tower of academia? If we want to have our research make an impact, we need more scientists to be willing to explore careers where they can share their scientific background with other communities.
