Yes, your cervix is donut-esque 🍩 Most of the month it’s barely open, during your period it softens and opens about 1 cm so blood can pass, and in labor it stretches to a full 10 cm so an entire baby can come through! #reels #doula #pregnancy #periods #womenshealth

You’ve probably heard “you can’t get pregnant on your period”, and while that’s technically true, there’s a catch. The reason you can’t get pregnant during your period is because ovulation has passed. But, sometimes bleeding that looks like a period is actually unscheduled bleeding or spotting. Spotting between otherwise normal periods is something I take seriously in clinic. Especially when it happens after sex, with exercise, or with orgasm. One common cause is uterine polyps, but they aren’t the only possibility. The uterus has a few different ways it can create abnormal bleeding, and understanding the difference actually matters for treatment. The good news is that many of these causes are very treatable once we identify them. Curious what you were told when you first had spotting? • “Just hormones” • “Normal in your 40s” • “We should evaluate that” Tell me in the comments. I’m a doctor. But not your doctor. Everything here is for education, not medical advice. Stay curious, stay evidence based, and always talk to your provider before making changes. #ScienceStraightTalkSass

@pagingdrfran shutting down the misinformation 💪🏽 We understand. Dealing with your period can be inconvenient, painful, and even a source of shame. It’s natural to want more control over our bodies. However, this “scooping your period” trend needs to end 😳 As Dr. Fran explains, while you can remove the blood and tissue that has already exited the uterus, neither you nor your doctor can/should attempt to enter the cervix to remove the shedding uterine lining. A D&C (Dilation and Curettage) procedure is a medical procedure used in specific circumstances—such as after a miscarriage, for abnormal bleeding, or for diagnosis. It involves risks and requires recovery time. It is absolutely NOT a quick fix to shorten your period. 🎙️Listen to the full episode on Off With Your Coat to hear more, and stick around for a fun “True or False” segment at the end to tackle common health misinformation. #womenshealth #womenshealth #period

Heavy menstrual bleeding is common. But common does not mean normal. I treat it every week in my office. And I’ve experienced it myself. Heavy cycles affect: • Energy • Athletics • School and work • Confidence As both an OB/GYN and a mom raising a daughter, I care deeply about solutions that support the body — not just suppress it. That’s why I’m excited about @ohm.body It uses transauricular vagal nerve stimulation and has shown up to a 55% reduction in menstrual blood loss. Non-invasive. At home. No hormones. This isn’t about replacing medical care. It’s about expanding options. Our daughters deserve to know: Heavy bleeding is treatable. Their bodies are not broken. And they have choices. *opinion only. Not medical advice. #painfulperiods #periodhealth #knowyourbody

Not to brag but I have a consistent, symptom-free period most of the time. So when my period is off, I know it’s a sign for me to pay attention to the inputs my body is getting. But so many women miss out on being this in touch with their bodies because they’re placed on hormonal birth control at an early age. We’d rather NOT get our period and skip it than to have it as feedback. And if you don’t have a regular, painless period then you become desensitized to the fact that this is your norm. (Shout out to my ladies with PCOS and endo, I know your part of this conversation is very nuanced, don’t come at me) If I had a painful or irregular cycle, here’s a checklist I’d start with: ✔️ Am I eating a minimally-processed whole foods balanced diet with adequate protein, carbs, and fats for my body’s daily needs and function? ✔️ Am I moving my body regularly with both exercise and non-exercise activity? If the answer is yes, am I recovering well from my training sessions? ✔️ Am I getting 7+ hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep? Do I feel well rested when I wake up or like I need to pull myself through the seven layers of Hell to get out of bed in the morning? ✔️ Am I balancing sympathetic (stress) activation with parasympathetic (recovery) activation? Or does my nervous system feel like it’s one minor inconvenience away from a breakdown? If you’re not sure, I’m here to help 🤘🏼
