The Pricking up coat on laths or scratch coat is the most important stage when installing lath and plaster. It determines whether a ceiling or wall will last 500+ years or potentially fail within a month. Correct specification, application, and curing at this point is critical to its longevity.

Second coat of the lime plaster and we learnt that I’m going to need a lot more practise before I can pass as a plasterer 😂 We also learnt that second coat was finished with a churn brush rather than scratch coat which creates a more gentle key. Extra time was also taken with levelling of the walls as best as possible, so where the walls were uneven, more plaster was applied to try and create a more level and even wall. New Scratch Coat Who Dis!? 😂 Have you ever seen a Brownstone with crazy cement grooves all over it and wondered what it is? It’s called a scratch coat! The scratch coat is composed of cement, sand and water that is mixed on site. In order for the scratch coat to harden properly, it needs to cure for at least 20 days. Then after drying- that beautiful Brownstone is applied. Applying two coats of cement plastering (often referred to as “plating” or rendering) is a standard practice for achieving a durable, smooth finish on interior and exterior walls. Typically, this process is broken down into a base coat and a finishing coat to ensure the wall is both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing. 1. The First Coat (Rough Coat/Scratch Coat) The primary goal of the first coat is to level the wall and provide a strong bond for the final layer. • Thickness: Usually 12\text{mm} to 15\text{mm}. • Mix Ratio: Often a 1:4 or 1:5 ratio (1 part cement to 4 or 5 parts coarse sand). • Application: The mortar is dashed onto the brickwork and leveled using a straight edge. It is often “scratched” or left slightly rough to help the second coat adhere better. 2. The Second Coat (Finishing Coat) The second coat provides the final smooth texture required before painting or applying wallpaper. • Thickness: Usually 3\text{mm} to 6\text{mm}. • Mix Ratio: A finer 1:3 ratio (1 part cement to 3 parts fine/sifted sand) is common for a smoother result. • Application: This is applied once the first coat has set but is still “green” (slightly damp).
