When Richard Linklater began casting for Before Sunrise, he wasn’t simply looking for two actors, but for two souls capable of carrying an entire film built almost entirely on dialogue and human connection. The choice of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy was not immediate, but the result of a meticulous search. Linklater saw Hawke in a stage play in New York and was deeply impressed. Shortly afterward, he met Delpy in Paris, sensing in her the natural sensitivity and intelligence that could bring Céline to life. The director then invited them both to Austin for a screen test that lasted several days.
