A deadly outbreak turned sea stars into “zombies” and triggered one of the largest marine die-offs ever recorded. ⭐🌊 Rachael, known as @thenatureeducator, explores how sea star wasting disease devastated populations from Baja California to Alaska beginning in 2013. The outbreak wiped out more than 90% of sunflower sea stars, a keystone predator that controls purple sea urchins in kelp forest ecosystems. Without them, ecosystem balance was disrupted along the Pacific coast. THIS IS HOW STARS ARE BORN!! Many sea stars begin life as young fairy-like creature (called a brachiolaria) that float through the open ocean. Brachiolaria can feed and move, living for weeks to months in the water column (kind of like an ocean caterpillar). Eventually, when they’ve grown large enough, a small star forms within them (here in yellow). At first blush, we know this looks like nothing more than a tiny splatter of fry sauce on a ruler, but it happens to be one of the coolest little finds the Oregon Marine Reserves Ecological Team has ever discovered. This little guy actually is a sea star, all 3 mm of him. It was discovered Aug. 5, during an intertidal survey of mussel beds and mussel predator counts at Otter Rock Marine Reserve. It’s so tiny that we can’t even decide for sure what it is. But, then again, who of us other than Winston Churchill looks like his birth photo? Likely candidates are an ochre sea star (Pisaster ochraceus) or a bat star (Patiria miniata).
