✅ When 2nd grade math is more complicated than you remember. 🤯 Our kids are being taught strategies that we just had to figure out on our own. That means there are a lot of new names and diagrams you never learned! 🚫 But that doesn’t mean these are bad methods, or a waste of time. They are building blocks to give our kids number sense that a lot of us missed out on! 💭 So please try to learn these strategies alongside your student and encourage them to talk through their thought process as they solve them. It’s amazing how flexible their brains can be!! 👉🏼 Follow @MathyMama for help with elementary math topics! Comment “MAT” for the link to 100+ math mats perfect for 2nd-3rd grade 💕 Yall the standard algorithm is so abstract so I break it down for my kiddos so they can understand the why behind regrouping. If not, they will just be following a bunch of steps and have no clue why they are doing what they are doing. #iteachthird #iteachsecond #tpt #elementarymath #mathteacher

Hot take 🔥 When I add numbers in real life… I don’t use the first way (the way we grew up learning). 😱 Sometimes I round. ⭕️ Sometimes I break numbers apart. ⛓️💥 Sometimes I use partial sums. 🤔 Because that’s what actually makes sense in my head. 💭 Comment which way makes more sense to you? 👇 #mathhelp #2ndgrademath #mentalmath #partialsums #parentinghelp

What makes the difference when it comes to students actually memorizing math facts? ✨Math Fact Strategies✨ These help students build number sense and make connections between the numbers and facts. Our brains love these connections. Which means it makes it easier to commit the facts to memory. I also love math fact strategies because they help students discover the answer to the facts by themselves. If they forget a fact in the moment, they can pick a strategy to solve. Because they discover the fact, this also helps them memorize it better than if they were just told the answer. There are a lot of tricky skills in kindergarten math. It’s the first time many students are introduced to mathematical thinking and concepts, and without hands on learning opportunities, math can be a big struggle for young learners! When I am writing math lesson plans for Good at Math™️, the first thing I ask myself is “how can I make this visual?” and “how can I make this manipulative?” I am always looking for new ways to bring math skills to life and make the abstract concepts more concrete. Providing math mats to hold their thinking, objects to keep track of their thinking, and math sentence and equation frames to record their findings, students are able to do complex skills without getting lost or overwhelmed. If math worksheets and workbooks aren’t working for your kindergartner and you’re looking for a more hands-on, developmentally appropriate math curriculum that teaches how children learn best, comment GOOD AT MATH and I’ll send you a link to browse the units and find the one you’re learner is ready for! 🏷️ #kindergartenmath #goodatmath #mathcurriculum #handsonmath #homeschoolmath
