The Glitch Delay/Reverb gives you three controls for Chance, Smear, and Glitch. Chance randomizes the audio signal that gets fed to the delay line, Smear adds diffusion allowing for reverb-like textures to emerge, and Glitch creates clock subdivisions for octave jumps that can be static or random, depending on the knob position. Dissolve is just a single knob that reduces the sample rate when below noon, and above noon the signal is reversed with increasing chance of the signal being halved as you turn it up. In this video, I dive into one of the most talked-about topics among pedal builders and tone aficionados: clipping diodes in a hard-clipping circuit. And what better platform to experiment on than the legendary Pro Co RAT 2? I breadboarded the original RAT II circuit as close to spec as possible and swapped in a variety of different clipping diodes to hear how each one responds in this iconic distortion topology. Silicon, germanium, LEDs, and a few less common options — all tested back to back so you can clearly hear the differences in compression, headroom, gain character, and overall feel. There are plenty of diode comparison videos out there, but it’s always a blast to revisit this circuit and explore how small component changes can dramatically shape the sound. Each diode brings its own personality to the RAT’s aggressive, mid-focused grind. To put the pedal through its paces, I dialed in some tones inspired by Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, who famously used a RAT for his crushing riffs. What better test than playing “Spoonman” and hearing how each diode configuration handles those gritty, punchy lines?
