SAVE for later 📌 5 Etiquette Tips I have learned while shadowing a doctor ⬇️⬇️ 1. Watch your body language!! ~ Pay attention to your non-verbal cues and facial expressions 👁️ ~ Maintain good posture, avoid fidgeting, and show attentiveness ~ I’ll never forget one physician who told me to walk at the same pace and next to, the doctor so that we can talk while on the move 2. Make sure you’re always listening… ~ Avoid interrupting or talking over anyone 3. Offer to help 🤲 ~ If there is a chance to assist with non-clinical tasks, like organizing paperwork or setting up equipment, offer to help. ~ But definitely always wait for permission before taking action 4. Remember everyone comes from a different background ~ Make sure you stay respectful of the diverse backgrounds of patients, healthcare providers, and staff you meet 💫 ~ Show sensitivity to cultural differences and avoid making assumptions 5. Be early and prepared 🫡 ~ Always be prepared with any necessary materials, such as a notebook and pen, to take notes ~ have a list of questions handy in case you have downtime with the doctor ‼️ I have a list up if you want some starting points! //SAVE FOR LATER// When I tell you shadowing is too easy to find. People often think they need to have family relatives or upperclassmen friends to find shadowing. While those connections can make it easier; here are ways I found shadowing without those connections. 1. Cold emailing doctors from your university webpage. Trust me this works. Doctors love helping students—especially ambitious students who want to learn. Template at the end! 2. Emailing residents and fellows who work at the hospital. You’ll be surprised, but their contacts are actually on the university page and you can email them too, by slightly tweaking the template! 3. Go to networking events, GO OUT THERE. You don’t have connections? Well then MAKE THEM. Connections are a game changer. 4. Sometimes premed advisors have good contacts for doctors to shadow/programs. 5. Lastly if you volunteer in the hospital and see a doctor passing by, start a conversation! And you can ask how shadowing works. Template for cold emails: Hello Dr. [blank] I hope you are doing well! I’m currently a [year] student at [blank university] studying [blank] on the premed track! I was researching physicians and your speciality stuck out to me. I have always been fascinated by [blank]. They’re far more likely to say yes. 2️⃣ Cold email or call strategically Most premeds send generic messages—so no one responds.
