Not the most glamorous part, but certainly one of the most satisfying parts of the job of an artist. I just love seeing where all of my shell commissions are headed! While I have a lot of beach destinations on my list, some clients live in unexpected places! These three are headed to: Winston Salem, Scottsdale and Cincinnati! This is the fun part. The painting of shells are complete. Gold trim is done. They get to be placed on canvas, adhered then sent off to the new owner! 🩵

Each shell piece I make starts the same way — at my table, painting one small shell at a time. When people see the finished piece, they often assume the shells are collected or assembled first. But every single one begins as its own tiny painting. I paint them individually, let them dry, and slowly build a pile that eventually turns into the final composition. It’s a slow process. A little meditative, a little chaotic when the shells start piling up, and honestly one of my favorite parts of making these pieces. I am always listing to a podcast while I’m doing this! Because every shell is painted by hand and every composition evolves differently, no two pieces are ever the same. Progress on a current commissioned shell piece! The client asked for a recreation of a previous framed shell canvas that I made. I’m pulling color inspiration (blues & neutrals) and design aspects from that piece. The best part is that while they’ll have similarities, no two canvases will ever be exactly the same because each shell is unique and every color is custom mixed. Adhering the shells and these final stages are my least favorite. I’m so excited to have my piece go to new owners but anxiety ticks in with the permanency. I want it to look perfect, I don’t want to make any mistakes this far in. The adhesives can be messy. But we did it!
