Red shouldered hawks tend to be noisy rehab patients, but this little one wins the award for noisiest! This young one from a couple years ago had so much to tell us on his intake exam 😂 Thankfully his injuries were minor and he was able to rejoin his family within 2 weeks. So I didn’t break my nose but I did deviate my septum… this game was like 2 years ago, we were filming me hooping in a suit, eventually the jacket came off which is why I have pants and a random tie on. But I got shouldered pretty hard in the nose on this play trying to guard in the post (DISCLAIMER IT WAS OBVIOUSLY AN ACCIDENT, the guy felt so bad), but it’s basketball and it happens! TBH he probably was a little too big for me to be guarding (again it’s basketball, it happens!)… I didn’t really think much of it at the time until I started getting chronic sinus infections… like I literally was just sick consistently for almost a year and a half. At first I didn’t know they were sinus infections so I just kept taking mucinex hoping things would get better (ALSO BAD IDEA), I was walking across the country with my hoop for almost 4 months with this infection that wouldn’t go away and Graves’ disease which I found out later too and a doctor that refused to even check my blood to see what was wrong. Fast forward, after advocating for myself at the doctors, many blood tests, doctor’s visits, and diagnoses later, I slowly but surely started figuring everything out! We think because I deviated my septum and I’ve been dealing with my autoimmune issues and the fact that I had enlarged turbinates in my nose, it was just a perfect storm for these chronic infections. So about 2 years later, here we are! Fixing my deviated septum, shaving down the turbinates in my nose, and praying that the infections stay away! 2 take aways from this post, 1) ALWAYS ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. You know your body. If something is off, make sure the doctor helps you figure out what is going on. That’s what you pay insurance for. Yeah it was a pain, but if I didn’t advocate for myself, I probably would still be very sick right now and not in remission for my autoimmune diseases, or on the road to fixing my chronic infections. 2) NOSE SURGERY HURTS SO BAD. It’s not really like a normal pain. It’s like the most uncomfortable feeling I’ve ever experienced and you can’t breathe on top of it. But end of day I’m so thankful to have had a successful surgery! What did Leonardo da Vinci really look like? For a man who created thousands of sketches, paintings and sculptures - he kept his own appearance mysteriously private. In his youth, he was described as being a beautiful man, with flowing curly hair and everything meticulously groomed. He was broad shouldered and strong throughout his life. We’re not sure of his hair or eye color - but we can imagine the coloring of a stereotypical northern Italian man. Unfortunately we may never know what young Leonardo truly looked like, because although this statue of David by Andrea del Verrocchio is rumored to be based on his appearance, we’re not sure. Leonardo worked as Verrocchio’s apprentice, and the appearance does match up with the contemporary descriptions. That's what I've based this image on. That scream! Those feet! That flip! 😂 A red-shouldered hawk had just swooped in and tried to grab a duckling. Thanks to an alert, experienced wood duck mother, every one of her babies made it. These kiddos are only a few days old and already know when to duck 😆 And get this… when mom came up, she went after the hawk with full-on “back off” attitude.
