📍 National Shrine Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dallas, Texas ⛪ In 1869, Dallas’ first Catholic parish was founded as Sacred Heart Church, marking the beginning of a vibrant Catholic presence in North Texas. Over the years, priests and religious like the Ursuline Sisters built up the parish with schools and ministries, planting deep roots of faith in the city. 🕊️ In 1890, Sacred Heart was named the diocesan cathedral, and just a few years later, work began on a new cathedral building at Ross and Pearl Streets. Fr. Jeffrey Hartnett, who championed its construction, gave his life during the 1899 smallpox epidemic while ministering to the sick, remembered as a “martyr to duty.” 📜 The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was dedicated in 1902 and designed by Nicholas J. Clayton, one of the premier architects of 19th-century Texas. For decades, it stood as the spiritual heart of the growing Catholic community in Dallas. 🌹 In 1977, after merging with Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, which had served Mexican immigrants since 1914, the cathedral was renamed Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe.
