Adelaide is hollowing out, shuttered venues, soaring rents, empty streets. But this isn’t just a city in decline. South Australia is collapsing. $38B debt. Youth jobless. Health failing. The Esplanade has been shuttered for a few years at this point, but through the 80s and 90s it was a very popular shopping mall in Kenner, serving the New Orleans area and River Parishes. Among the reasons it declined was shifting consumer shopping habits seen among malls nationwide, hurricanes, population dynamics, and overlapping competing malls with similar offerings, but many (including me) remember Esplanade fondly, particularly its terraced dining area and Mediterranean-inspired decorations. This ad from 1986 shows a hopeful future and a glamorous introduction for this mall. RIP, Esplanade!! In case anyone is wondering, this is a repost from my personal Instagram account. I was receiving too many comments and follows on there from this ad from people I didn't know who would be subjected to my private life and it wasn't comfortable. There were a ton of comments from people who wanted to comment that it was closed and in ruins now (sure, whatever), that it takes more than 15 minutes to get there from downtown (it might but not by much), and people who used it as an opportunity to make racist and classist comments or speculate why the place closed (dumb). This is a unicorn among playgrounds— it is new and awesome AND shaded! Almost every other brand new playground clears out all the trees—at most we find saplings that might provide some shade to our grandkids someday. Carlisle managed to keep their gorgeous old trees during this playground build, even designing the castle structure around one of the biggest trees. 🎓 Carlisle Castle is a school playground, so during the school year you’ll need to stick to weekends/holidays/evenings. In the summer some schools do have weekday programming, so be aware that you could be turned away on a weekday (we don’t know the summer status at this school). 👶🏼Ages 4-10 are in the sweet spot to get the most out of this playground. There is a tot section that would be an amazing tot lot on its own, and it is mostly fenced but not gated from the big-kid elements, where it will be easy to lose sight of your little one (wear bright shirts!) There is no fence separating the main playground from the parking lot, though the whole playground is set away from the main road. 🅿️Huge parking lot under solar panels (which provide even more shade) ♿️Accessibility: Most of the playground is wood chips, but there is some pour-in-place rubber leading to an inclusive merry-go-round and to a ramp up the main structure (there is an extra step to be able to reach the slide.) The adaptive swing is over woodchips. 🧻Like most school playgrounds, we didn’t see any public bathrooms. A portapotty at ball fields down the street was locked on the weekday evening when we visited— you might have better luck during sports games (turn right when leaving the parking lot) ⭐️This playground is in a league of its own! Calls to Save Wikie and Keijo 🐋🙏 In a shuttered marine park on the French Riviera, Wikie and her son Keijo circle endlessly in crumbling, algae-infested tanks. Once the stars of Marineland’s live shows, this mother-son orca duo are the last captive killer whales in France– and they have nowhere to go next.   Newly released drone footage, filmed by TideBreakers, shows the orcas swimming in algae-rich water surrounded by empty enclosures. Animal activists are raising the alarm, arguing that the whales could become ill, and TideBreakers warn they could potentially “be euthanized or succumb to the deteriorating environment.”  When the park closed, it had 4,000 animals of 150 species. Most have been relocated, but Wikie, 23 years old, and her son Keijo, 11 years old, as well as 12 bottlenose dolphins, remain. Please help to pressure the French government to act with urgency. Write directly to President Emmanuel Macron, demanding he intervene immediately to ensure a humane, sustainable future for these animals and fulfill France’s commitment to animal welfare.
