23,890

The surface of a neocaridina shrimp's exoskeleton hosts a dynamic microscopic ecosystem of organisms known as epibionts, which include peritrich ciliates and specialized flatworms. In a well maintained aquarium, this relationship is largely commensal or even mutualistic where these organisms use the shrimp as a mobile platform to filter-feed on suspended bacteria in the water column. Emerging research suggests that a stable, moderate population of these microbes might actually protect the shrimp by physically occupying space and outcompeting pathogenic fungal spores, such as Saprolegnia, preventing them from taking root. However, this delicate biological balance is dictated entirely by water quality. If dissolved organics, nitrates, or bacterial loads spike in the aquarium, epibiont populations can reproduce exponentially, transitioning from harmless hitchhikers into a suffocating burden that restricts the shrimp's joint articulation, obstructs oxygen exchange across the gills, and causes severe chronic stress. I believe that in order to manage these microscopic passengers, Neocaridina rely on ecdysis, or molting, as their primary physical defense mechanism. By periodically shedding their old cuticle, shrimp effectively discard their entire accumulated epibiont load, instantly resetting their external microbiome. The danger arises when a shrimp is severely weakened by poor water quality or an overwhelming epibiont infestation, so it may lack the energy to successfully complete this molt, which is almost universally fatal. For the dedicated aquarist, successfully keeping Neocaridina does not mean striving for a sterile, lifeless tank, but rather maintaining strict control over organic waste and observing the colony's molting behavior to ensure the environment always favors the shrimp's natural defenses. I am developing a complete guide on neocaridina containing info like that. www.impossibleaquariums.com for more aquarium ecology. Link in bio. #plantedtank #shrimptank #fishtank

POV: You give your fish more than flakes. I’ve been told by many people “my fish don’t grow” or “my fish is growing slow”. While many factors come into play when trying to grow out a fish, (clean water and) diet is crucial. That’s why I do live feedings for my predators. Bichirs, ctenopomas, and acaras are ambush hunters in the wild. That natural chase stimulates instinct, reduces boredom, supports a better quality of life, both physically and behavioral wise. Healthy fish aren’t just well-fed. They’re mentally stimulated too. ( Live feeding can introduce parasites or disease if the feeder source isn’t properly quarantined or raised responsibly. Always source carefully and know your risks. ) • • • #aquascape #fishkeepers #plantedtank #bichir #leopardctenapoma
