Explore the fascinating "Pi from Collisions" phenomenon. This simulation demonstrates a famous problem in classical mechanics where the number of elastic collisions between a small block, a massive block, and a wall surprisingly equals the digits of $\pi$. In this video, we use our custom-built "Pi Discovery Engine" to visualize: Mass Ratio 100: Results in 31 collisions (the first two digits of $\pi$). Mass Ratio 10,000: Results in 314 collisions. Mass Ratio 1,000,000: Results in 3,141 collisions. As the mass of the larger block increases by powers of 100, the count reveals more digits of Pi. This happens because the conservation of momentum and energy equations can be mapped onto the coordinates of a circle! Congrats to Gnomon student Manav Gala (@3dgala), who won “Best of Term – Effects | Design” during the Spring 2025 competition!   Created in our VFX Design course taught by Eric Araujo, Manav’s project was inspired by Hydro-Man from Spider-Man: Far From Home and tackled large-scale water simulation using @autodesk Maya, @sidefxhoudini, @foundryteam Nuke, and DaVinci Resolve. This video represents a molecular simulation that tracks the location of every atom and the bonds that connect them using realistic physical and chemical principles. Scientists use this technology to understand the interactions between proteins in great detail. In this example, the molecular dynamic simulations revealed significant interactions between negatively charged amino acids on hemoglobin A (HbA), and positively charged amino acid side chains on endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), that help to hold them together.
