Physicist Lee Smolin calculated the odds of these numbers landing in a life compatible range by chance: 1 in 10²²⁹ This is called the fine tuning problem. And it makes people uncomfortable. So some physicists proposed a solution: maybe there are infinite universes 🌌 , a multiverse. Each with randomly assigned constants. And cause of that, by chance alone, some would allow life. We just happen to be in the one that worked. Philosopher Philip Goff argues this is an elementary statistical mistake: the inverse gambler’s fallacy 🎰 The fallacy is simple: you see a rare outcome and assume there must have been many unseen attempts before it. But the thing is..past trials don’t change the probability of this event. Each trial is independent. Think of it this way: if you saw a monkey randomly typing perfect English 🐒⌨️ would you assume there must be billions of other monkeys typing nonsense somewhere? Other monkeys don’t explain this monkey. Same with the multiverse. Other universes don’t change the probability of this universe being fine tuned. To be clear — I’m not saying the multiverse doesn’t exist… honest answer is idk (no one knows) but String theory has arguments for it. And some people use fine tuning to argue for God. That’s a separate debate. The point is simpler: fine tuning alone isn’t proof of a multiverse. It’s just a rare outcome. And the inverse gambler’s fallacy is why we keep reaching for explanations that don’t actually explain anything.
