So-called mixed voice is not exactly “a balance between chest and head voice” as if they were two separate boxes. According to authors like Titze and Sundberg, what we call “mix” is actually a coordination between the intrinsic muscles of the larynx, especially the balance between TA (thyroarytenoid) and CT (cricothyroid). These are tensor muscles that work in changing vocal frequency, from low to high notes. This coordination allows adjustments in mass, tension, and length of the vocal folds, resulting in a more efficient sound, with less effort and greater control in higher notes. Belting, on the other hand, is not simply “more chest voice” or just increasing volume. It is a specific vocal tract configuration associated with a production pattern that has higher acoustic energy. It involves: • greater glottal closure • increased subglottal pressure • vocal tract adjustments (more oral resonance and less cover) This generates more intensity, brightness, and projection, commonly used in more powerful styles. Now the most important point: ➡️ They are not opposites. ➡️ They are different strategies within the same vocal system. What changes is: • the muscular balance (TA/CT) • the vocal tract configuration • the level of subglottal pressure • the aesthetic intention You can notice the change in sound quality even though I don’t change the pitch.
