HERE 👇Being a single mum of 4 I’ve had to make a lot of adjustments to balance out my new way of life. With the changes have come incremental lessons. Here’s 5 things I’ve come to realise: 1) We choose our hard. Being in the wrong relationship, or an unhealthy one is hard, being a solo parent is hard. But one will feel harder, we just have to choose which one that is for us. 2) There is always a way out. For the longest time I felt trapped. I felt I had nowhere to turn, no way out. I had broken myself in the process of trying to salvage my marriage & it was at the very bottom that I realised what would happen if I did nothing. I started to communicate my situation with people close to me & was able to slowly navigate each issue one step at a time. 3) We ARE capable. Anything in life is achievable if we are teachable, consistent & problem solve. Best advice I have on this is to ask questions. There is a wealth of knowledge & solutions at your fingertips if we can humble ourselves enough to ask others. 4) It is better for our children to have two happy homes than one unhappy, unhealthy home. We are the role models for their expectations & how they show up for their own partners in the future. Is this example what we would want for their marriage? It’s a heavy question but it’s eye opening. 5) Divorce is grief. I am the happiest I’ve been ever. I cannot even tell you how much I love my life! But I still have waves of grief - triggers are usually the main catalyst for this. It’s okay. Let the thoughts come, acknowledge them, acknowledge that you can miss parts of something you don’t want, relish in the waves of thoughts pondering “how did it even get to this”, & then show yourself grace. Find comfort in knowing that all these moments will pass. You’re not going backwards, you’re just being human. Do you know what the hardest job in the world is? Being a single parent. If you have a friend that’s a single parent, you have a superhero for a friend. Every day, they show up and pour out endless amounts of love and energy and meet nonstop needs without any help. When the kids act up, there’s no one else to step in. Every night, you put the kids to bed alone. You plan all the meals for the week, cook, clean up, and on top of that, you have to be the provider for the family. You’re literally doing a job that’s impossible to do alone, but you’re not complaining. You’re still showing up every day, bringing your full self.
