#sinop 🇬🇧 This is the easternmost bastion of the historic walls of Sinop, which includes the much storied Sinop Fortress Prison. Positioned approximately 700 metres to the east of the now defunct prison, this 9 metre-wide and 20-something metre-tall bastion overlooks the city's modern harbour. Possibly built during the times of the Mithridatic Kingdom of Pontus, the walls were almost completely rebuilt during medieval times as the Eastern Roman Empire reigned supreme in the region. The walls were restored several times during Seljuk, Jandarid and Ottoman times, too, with inscriptions dated 1215, 1218 and 1434 all referring to major restorative works. The city was historically called Sinope (Σινώπη) before the Turkish conquest. 🇹🇷 Gördüğünüz yapı, tarihî Sinop surlarının doğu ucundaki burcudur ve çokça hikâyeye konu olan Sinop Cezaevini de içine alan sur sisteminin bir parçasıdır. Hâlihazırda kapalı olan cezaevinin yaklaşık 700 metre doğusunda yer alan ve 9 metrelik genişliği ve 20 metreyi aşan yüksekliğiyle dikkat çeken bu burç, şehrin modern limanına hâkim bir konumdadır. Surlar, kuvvetle muhtemel Antik Pontos Krallığı döneminde (M.Ö. 3 ilâ 1. asır) inşa edilmiş ve bölgede Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu’nun egemen olduğu Orta Çağ’da neredeyse tamamen yeniden yapılmıştır. Selçuklu, Candaroğulları ve Osmanlı dönemlerinde de çeşitli onarımlardan geçmiş surlar içerisinde 1215, 1218 ve 1434 yıllarına tarihlenen kitâbelerin varlığı, bu dönemlerde icra edilmiş güçlendirme çalışmalarını belgelendirmektedir.
