I have also shared some helpful information about watercolor paper sizing below: 📌Save, 🔂repost, or 📤 share this post for an easy size reference later. ▫️ Full Sheet (Full Imperial) – 22 × 30 in (56 × 76 cm) ▫️ Half Sheet – 15 × 22 in (38 × 56 cm) ▫️ Quarter Sheet – 11 × 15 in (28 × 38 cm) ▫️ Eighth Sheet – 7.5 × 11 in (19 × 28 cm) ▫️ Double Elephant – 29 × 41 in Artists often buy full sheets and cut or tear them down depending on scale. Working this way keeps proportions consistent and is often more economical. For collectors: Double elephant, full, half and quarter sheet terms are titles describing paper size with historical roots. If you see a painting listed as a “quarter sheet,” that typically means 11 × 15 inches. Same color. Same dilution. Three different papers. 0% cotton, 50% cotton, and 100% cotton — and the difference is very interesting 👀 I painted simple swatches and then did charging (adding the same color into the wet paint). Surprisingly, the 0% cotton took the longest to dry — even though I painted it first. For me, 100% cotton gave the smoothest blends and handled the charging beautifully. 50% cotton wasn’t bad at all — it really comes down to preference and budget. Tell me if there is another paper better than this one! No gate keeping but out of all the watercolour papers I have tried over the years, my favourite is the Fabriano Watercolour enhanced blocks. They are more expensive than watercolour pads but worth it when on sale. For artists like me who do not have a lot of space in their studio, these blocks are a space saver as I don’t need the extra space or time to stretch the paper beforehand.

How to strech your watercolor like a pro! 😍 You need a board (mine is from the hardware store), wet tape, scissors, a sponge and clean water. Here is how to strech the paper: 1. thoroughly soak the paper from all sides and let the cotton fibers expand for about 10-15 min 2. cut your tape to size and stick it to your paper so that it‘s half on the paper and half on the board 3. make sure that there are no airbubbles 4. let it dry over night 5. paint and enjoy your perfectly flat paper 🤩 6. cut the paper off the board and then cut the tape off the paper 7. re-wet the leftover tape on your board and peel it off after 2-3 min ✨I hope this was helpful for you! Mounting Watercolor the Right Way 🎨📐 Watercolor paper moves. It expands when it absorbs moisture and contracts as it dries. Even after the painting is finished, humidity in the air continues to make the fibers swell and shrink. If you tape all four sides down to a mat board, the paper has nowhere to move. Over time, it will buckle, warp, or develop stress ripples. The correct method is simple and intentional: Use acid-free archival tape only along the top edge. This creates a hinge. The painting hangs naturally inside the mat window, allowing the paper to expand and contract freely with changes in humidity. This protects the fibers, prevents warping, and keeps the artwork museum-safe. Watercolor is delicate, but if mounted properly, it can last generations.
