The best way to start the week! After all these years working with sloths, I still find myself surprised by how strange they are. Some of their behaviours seem completely illogical… until you understand the world they’re adapted to, and then somehow it all makes perfect sense! 💚

Watch this sloth slowly cross the forest path. Sloths move slowly because of their extremely low metabolic rate. Found in the tropical forests of Central and South America, these tree dwellers move through the canopy at a rate of about 40 yards per day.

Just hanging around with this two-toed sloth at Fame Park in Dubai! 🦥💚 You might think being upside down would be uncomfortable, but for them, that’s actually their “right side up.” Sloths are built for a life spent suspended from branches, their organs are positioned differently inside their bodies, with their stomachs, livers, and even spleens shifted to accommodate hanging. Their long curved claws act like natural hooks, locking into place so they can hang effortlessly without using any muscle energy. Even their hair grows in the opposite direction from other mammals, parting down their belly so rainwater can run off while they’re inverted. So when you see a sloth hanging, just know that’s their version of standing upright! 🌿✨

Sloth update: We are saddened to report that Habanero passed away on Saturday evening. It is devastating for everyone to lose an animal, but none more so than for our veterinary and animal care teams who truly gave their all to give Habanero a chance. Habanero was one of the sloths identified as most vulnerable when the sloths were taken as a donation from Sloth World. While our team saw some early signs of progress after treatment, this is still a delicate time for all of the sloths in our care, and his condition began rapidly deteriorating Thursday afternoon. When it became clear that his condition would not improve, the difficult decision was made Saturday for humane euthanasia. At this time, two additional animals are in guarded condition. Our team, working in consultation with other experts from around the country, continues to give their all in what we expect will be a long fight.
