This painting, Eternal Breath, is inspired by the way horses interact. They stop everything to breathe into each other’s nostrils and check in. I realized when watching my horses do this that we too must resist indifference and choose to connect. This piece is a reminder to pause and return to what’s most important. When life feels loud and rushed, what helps you reconnect?

I’ve always found horses to be so calming. Their energy is grounding. I had the opportunity to meet a few new horses recently. And it inspired me to capture their energy. How they feel steady, calm, and grounded. Large scale artwork transforms a way a room feels, not just how it looks. There’s a moment when a horse chooses someone. Yesterday, I watched it happen. When Colton comes, he’s quiet, thoughtful and very eager to connect with the horses and flow through yoga and breath with me. We didn’t rush into anything. We started with breath. Just standing there, letting the breath move in and out, feeling grounded in just a few minutes. Then he painted. Watercolor. The kind where the colors bleed into each other and do what they want. You can guide it a little, but you can’t control it. I’ve always loved that about watercolor… it asks you to soften your grip. He was meticulous with his paint strokes, and created a frame-worthy masterpiece. After a while, we walked out to the pasture. KeKe was watching. She does that often…ears forward, reading the field before anyone else notices there’s something to notice. She walked over and positioned herself between Colton and my other horse. Calm. Steady. Almost protective. She kept him on one side of her body, like she was creating a boundary he didn’t have to think about. And then she did something I’ve only seen once before. She wrapped her neck around him. Not a nudge. Just… a slow drape of her neck across his shoulders. The only other time she’s done that was with a woman carrying a kind of pain you could feel in the air before she ever spoke it. Horses just know. There’s something that happens out there when no one is trying to impress anyone. When there’s no outcome to achieve. When breath comes first and everything else follows with a horse. It’s quieter than therapy questions, and it’s gentler than riding. That’s the kind of space I keep finding here. Just room for people to regulate. Room for horses to respond.
