Spilling the smoke and mirrors of garden design 👇🏻 The smallest footprints often make the most magical cottage gardens! These are the design secrets you should know if you have a small garden or a small yard you want to feel bigger: 1. Plant 60% of your space and leave 40% open—grass, hardscape, pathways, and any “void.” This balances the space while giving you lots of lush layers of flowers. Since the majority is planted, the garden feels larger. 2. Plant vertically. Use obelisks, walls, fences, arches, arbors, and pergolas to draw the eye up and use vertical real estate. 3. Always try to plant at least 4’ deep beds. It’s better to plant a deeper 4-6’ section and leave the rest shallower than keep everything 2’. It’ll feel dinky. Day 6 of transforming my tiny soulless new build garden. When I moved into my townhouse, the backyard was covered in weeds that were taller than the fence. I literally think it was the only backyard in the whole association that was unkempt like that lol After I removed the weeds it was just a concrete slab and two strips of dirt that bordered each side. I started my garden with the two steel beds and the rest is history! Each year I have tried to make it a little bit better and grow vertically. The garden has been noticeably absent from the grid this year, and here’s why. Foxes 🦊 I went away for a few days, and came back to all my raised beds dug up, bags of soil broken open all over the patio, pots smashed, and they even ate the shoelaces off a pair of trainers I’d left by the back door 😂 not to mention a crazy amounts of fox 💩 It doesn’t look quite this bad right now, but I’m on operation clean-up properly from this week. Using it as an excuse to repaint the fences, replace some plants, and do some other maintenance. Oh and yes I’ll probably try fox-proof the garden while I’m at it! Those white concrete planters swooping around the garden with nothing but land and trees for miles… something like that anyway! Well unfortunately my “borrowed view” is more houses, fences and rooftops which is pretty normal! My garden a pretty normal size, with normal plants with a not so special borrowed view!
