They sent us out either to change the meter or shut your power off.” This Aurora Xcel customer was given the choice: receive a smart meter he had previously tried to reject or have had power shut off. Spoiler alert: His power was not in danger of being shut off (in that moment). But this interaction recorded on a doorbell camera helps explain the nuance of opting out of Xcel smart meters and time of use, which are two different opt outs. All Xcel customers have received or will get a new meter. The smart meters all you to track your usage in real time and let Xcel charge you different rates based on time of day. You can opt out of time of use rates and opt for one flat rate 24 hours a day. That’s a different opt out than the meter opt out. Non-communicating meters or “dumb” meters are also new meters but still require Xcel to drive by your home and read your meter manually. You can opt out of a smart meter and pay $11.84/mo for a dumb meter, but it’s still going to be a new meter on your home. That was not communicated accurately to this Xcel customer who relented and accepted a smart meter to keep his power on (which wasn’t necessary in the moment) instead of a non-communicating meter, which the customer prefers and will soon get instead. See how it says opt out no communication?! When we moved to our new house in April, I noticed the Smart Meter (which almost EVERYONE has now) was right outside our bedroom 😭 Smart meters are CONSTANTLY in contact via an electric signal like wifi with the electric company, meaning you can’t turn it off and it emits HIGH levels of EMF. EMFs are invisible but not harmless. They impact our cells, and can cause symptoms like headaches, adhd, anxiety, and more. Kids, whos skulls are thinner, are even more likely to feel the effects, and their brains are still developing! If the smart meter is near your garage for instance and you don’t spend a lot of time there, it may be no big deal, but if it’s anywhere close to a family room or bedroom or playroom, time to act 🤓 📞Most states have an opt out program. Call your electric company and ask they replace your smart meter with a non communicating digital analog meter. Someone will have to come read it… so this may cost more. For us it was $11/month. Worth it to me. 👷You can also have them move the smart meter to another location. This usually requires more work and a one time fee but could be an option! Comment where your smart meter is and if you’re going to switch it out. ⬇️
